Xbox 360 & DVD's?

Featured Replies

Is the xbox 360 also an HD-DVD player?

I'm not hugely into console gaming but may get one if it plays these dvd's also

Its ok, just found something at last on the microsoft site, they have released an HD dvd player that plugs into the 360 now

An xbox 360 will play normal DVDs without a problem. The drive / software will lock to the region you install the software player from / when you put a DVD in for the first time. I don't know if there's a way to unlock the region coding or not, I don't even have an xbox 360 anyway  Don't know whether the region locking is important to you or not.

You can also get an HD-DVD drive addon. I've been looking for one for ages (see thread) as they all went like hot cakes for Christmas. The HD-DVD addon connects via USB to the xbox 360 and can also be used in a PC. HD-DVD has no region coding at all, so if you want to buy US HD-DVDs, they'll play back fine  But if you only want DVD playback, then the basic console on its own is sufficient :)

I believe the 360 will up-scale conventional DVD's to 1080i too. Something the PS3 wont be able to do with it's blu-ray player ;)

Upscaling in general the PS3 struggles with..

PS2 games look worse on the PS3 than a proper ps2, and also games dont look right in 1080p/i either because it cant upscale....

XBOX all the way ;)

I don't think it does m8, unless there is some tweak I am missing, if I pop a DVD into the 360 then hit the info button on the tv it's 480P, when I pop the tv up to 1080i I get nada then it' goes back to 480p automatically.

Does this on the 37" tosh and the 32 Hynudai. I am interested in gettign the HD DVD add on though

what cable are you using to plug the xbox into the tv. I have heard reports that it will only upscale on a particular connection.

Yes, xbox 360 will only upscale normal dvds when connected to the tv via the VGA connection. If you use component then the output is switched to a non HD resolution when dvd playback is started.
