fabia dies when trying to move off

Featured Replies

Hi everyone,

about a week ago, on the way to work my fabia stalled whilst pulling away from a junction and then was fine. then the next morning it did it again and then was fine, then it was fine for three days. Then on my way to work again it stopped again, started it up and ran fine on tickover and reving but when i went to pull away it died. It now will run fine on tickover and when reving but you can get about 100 yards and it dies ??. I thought maybe crud in the fuel filter so replaced that, it started up and revved fine .. went to pull away and again it died??. I then read through the forums on here replaced the 109 relay thinking this was the problem, but no. I can feel the fuel pump wurring but i cant understand it. When the aa man checked it he told me it was the lift pump, after purchasing the haynes manual i found out that the sdi has no lift pump.

has anyone had this problem or has any idea what it wrong ?

In the haynes manual it says something about air in the system but it does not tell you how to get it out.

also where is the fuel pump relay? if its where the 109 relay is, what number is it ?

I would be really grateful for anyhelp possible

regards

richard

skoda 1.9 sdi fabia estate 44k miles 51 plate

Sorry but this might not help, my suzuki bandit motorbike did the same thing, found out that in the carb there was some sh#t in there and it blocked the needle from filling the carb with fuel, could be summat same with the fuel but not sure on diesel.........

If a diesel runs out of fuel is there a manual pump to fill the system, as you say wonder if there is air in there some how ????

PS, presume the injectors are ok ?? if a SDI has them...

hi spevie thanks for the reply i thought no-one could see my post lol :) . The sdi dose not have a manual pump i wish it did my old ax deseil did and was great if there was an air block i could pump it out . As for the injectors i guess they are ok as it will rev right up to the red line when standing still, but as soon as you go to move off it dies ?. Ive noticed that the fuel filter isnt full and you can here the fuel rattling around in there, Is that normal ? ?. Im wondering if its a sensor or something thats stopping fuel getting to the engine . Please If anyone has any ideas i would be really grateful .

thanks

just to keep you updated ive had the fuel cut of solinoid off, the rubber O ring was on the plunger, now from the looks of it this should be seated on the actual solinoid not the plunger. tested the soliniod but it dosent seem to do anything when you put power to it ?. Surely it must move or something . Im going to order another one on monday and another 109 relay just in case. Anyone had a problem with the solinoid on there furby ?

Hi Me again,

well ive managed to source a new solenoid and now the car wont start at all it will turn over fine but noooooo starting at all. Now because ive undone the solenoid would this put an error code into the ecu, and if so will this stop the car from running at all ? Im at a loss to be honest. Is it worth ordering a vag com cable and trying to do it myself as im more into computers than mechanics or should i wait till pay day and spend out?

thanks for reading i will keep you posted

Hope I'm not stating the obvious - have you at any time checked if there is water in the fuel.

Perhaps drain some fuel off - let it stand and see if any water separates out.

Hi anonymouse,

ive checked for water in the fuel and no water unfortunately, i wish it was that at least i could sort it out. The fuel filter isnt filling either so i used the vaslene to check for air leaks but no leaks, im really hoping it isnt the fuel pump cos im skint and i really need this car.

Ouch,

Together with what the AA man 'said' and the fact your fuel filter isn't filling, I think you are looking at the fuel pump (though I am somewhat of a layman). Keep my fingers crossed you get it sorted, reasonably cheaply.

It sounds like you've not visited a mechanic yet - do you / your family not know a good independent ? He should be able to diagnose pretty quickly (i.e. without charging an arm and a leg) and then at least you'll know what to budget for.

If you don't know a good independent then try and find a garage used by taxi drivers (most of their cars are diesel nowadays) - they depend on their cars and therefore usually use good local mechanics (I used to be a private-hire driver).

My Brother knows a taxi mechanic anonymouse, so were gonna try and get it up to him tommorow, the aa man also said it was the lift pump which my car dose not have he also said that the fuel pump must work as the engine was running, but who knows lol, i know i dont LOL. I think a dip into the pocket is going to happen. thanks for the reply

Just a bye the bye - there was a recall on certain 2004 Fabia diesels concerning the fuel pump bolts shearing leading to a diesel fuel leak.

Build Start Date : 01/03/2004

Build End Date : 31/08/2004

Details

Concern : BOLTS OF THE TANDEM FUEL PUMP COVER MAY BREAK

Description : It is advised that, on some vehicles fitted with a 3 and 4 cylinder pump injector engine, the bolts of the tandem fuel pump cover may break due to a bolt production fault. As a result, the pump housing will not be tight, and a diesel fuel leak may occur.

Remedial Action : Recalled vehicles will have the pump checked for being of a certain manufacture. If found to be within the affected range, the pump housing cover bolts will be replaced.

Just to let you all know its all up and running again :) . After speaking to a local mechanic he told me to buy a fuel primer pump. attached it to the fuel line and fuel started flooding out of the bottom of the fuel filter, my brother in his haste didnt put the rubber gasket on the bottom of the filter, that along with the sticking/faulty solenoid were the problems. Thank you to anonymouse and spevie for posting. I hope that this will help others if there furby starts playing up.

Magic !

A pretty inexpensive result I would think. Thanks for the 'thanks'.

Preston - next time post your full car details (age, type etc) in with your question, should make it easier for people to help you.

PS

Let's hope there isn't a 'next time'.

So long as a reply points you in the right direction, jobs a gudan......

Not that a bike related problem is relative to a SDI problem, hahaha, glad ya fixed.....
