Having heard a couple of times now that some tfsi vrs's are putting out more power than skoda's figures i found it interesting reading this from the review

I think they have kinda missed the point of the vRS. The reason why I have ordered on is precisely because it is understated. It can be a boring, everyday car if you want it to be, or a rapid hot hatch if your in the mood.

I don't get that impression with the ST, its full on all the time, which is great if your up for it, but there are times when you just want to get home as easily and with as little fuss as possible.

The Golf is shed loads more, the Astra is bonkers, and the Mondeo (which can be bought for about the same price) is being replaced this year and will be worth about

Hi. Just out of curiosity, where did you hear that?

It's the "BWA" engine thing. I've read a few threads where people with BWA TFSI motors (early'06 onwards?) get higher than the rated 197/200 bhp. Usually reports are 210 to 220.

Arguments usually ensue.

On the one side are people saying no way would a manufacturer "secretly" improve an engine in such a way "What about the insurance implications?" - must be dyno operators wanting to please their clients, eh.

On the other side, reported numbers and graphs.

Oh, and with Autocar in the mix there's the shame of the tuned MK1 review that harms Skoda's integrity. "MK2 vRS 6.6 to 60? Skoda must have supplied another ringer..."

Or most likely, RR's are inherently innaccurate and a manufacturer will measure their engines at the flywheel to get an accurate figure

The point of my post was the 0-60 time of 6.6 which was faster than the lighter gti and faster than the published skoda data. I would agree that the RR can be inacurrate but with that 0-60 time and the reports of 210-220 bhp on RR's it caught my attention.

Good that they're always optimistically inaccurate, tho, eh?

I'm aware a number of people have had their GTi or VRs on the rollers and 218bhp seems to be the figure that keeps getting reported.

Seemingly VAG made some minor upgrades to the 2.0T engines around Sept 05 - the BWA engine code signifies this.

There was also an article in last weeks AutoExpress where they were testing the benefits of aftermarket air filters and induction filters. They tested them on, amongst other cars, a Golf GTi. They measured the standard power output at 218bhp.

If it is indeed optimistic dyno's then they sure as hell are consistently optimistic...

Must be. It's also very rare you'd see 218bhp on lots of different rollers Most of them seem to change..

I can tell you I have seen a fair few Octy II RR sessions recently and most seem to give stock power. One did produce slightly higher figures but this was attributed to a rather brisk running in period.

A friend has just had his Octy Vrs2 upgraded - standard power was 195 bhp on the RR.

After upgrade it was 248 hp.

Most noticable was the after torque figure 420nm!!!

The car is considerably faster than my standard VRS2 !

The car in question was a Dealer Demonstrator so I would imagine had been used to it's potential from day 1.

Hmmm, I might try it when I get my car then.

I was brought up to use the engine when running in but with care. Prolonged full throttle no but let the engine run freely not using imposed rev limits that can mean the engine is laboured because drivers slavishly try and stay below those limits. Car empathy is the most appropriate term, you sense the load and effort being placed on the vehicle and use the engine and gearbox to provide the 'kindest' combination to deal with that load.

Using the the rev range is a yes, again with empathy. I wouldn't even consider thrashing an engine (running in or not), that suggests a couldn't care less attitude that lease and hire cars may be subject to, this is a far more rational process.
