Leaking sunroof

Featured Replies

Help I'm getting wet!

It seems that I have a leak from the sunroof on my MY01 Octavia.

The car is normally parked facing uphill, but I had the same problem a few weeks ago after heavy rain when it was parked facing down hill.

The first time I stop water runs out of the front vents on the sunroof screen.

I assumed at the time that it was because I had replaced the battery and the roof had lost tension.

Are there any drain channels within the roof that could be blocked?

The only seal seems to be the fabric strip that runs around the edge of the glass and nothing on the car itself. Is that correct?

Im hoping it could just be missaligned but it looks okay from the outside to me.

I have a call in with a couple of dealers, but I expect them to tell me it will need a new seal even if it is just an adjustment.

Thanks

andy

Yeah there are two drain channels IIRC from either side of the sunroof at the front which often get blocked up with debris.

Thanks, I wil have a look,

Just abit dark in the car park.

--Update

I have checked the drain hole(s) I can only see the drivers side one, but it is spotless inside the sunroof.

I dont think it was ever opened beyond the tilt before I brought the car of Dad.

try putting some water down it see what happens.

I could be wrong and there might only be one, i genuinely can't remember.

The other thing to remember is that debris builds up in the drain pipe as it breaks down and blocks the pipe. I would be worth taking the wheel arch liners off by the bottom rear of the front wheel arch and cleaning the bottom of the drain channels out there, and then pouring a jug of water down the sunroof drain.

You might just find that your sunroof drain is a bit slow running and under heavy rain it allows the water to back up and spill into the roof. We had similar on another car which just needed the drain holes properly cleaning out.

Additionally try using some rubber lube on the sunroof seal after giving it a quick clean with a damp cloth and making sure the metalwork around the roof where it meets is also clean.

Maybe I missed the passenger side drain.. or they didnt fit one... as it always seems to be the passenger side that gets wet!

If it ever stops raining I will get the arch liner off and check the drain flow.

It shouldnt be blocked as the car was always garaged and has only done 35K!

Skoda have come back and said £61 for checking to see what is wrong.

Not definative since I've not investigated this on an Octy, but IME there are usually 2 drains in a factory sunroof frame, at the front corners.

I'm pretty sure there are 4 drain holes/pipes, one from each corner of the sunroof, so that it'll drain whatever slope the car's parked on. There's kind of a gutter in the plastic moulding around the sunroof, so that water can run to whichever drain hole's lowest. I don't think they expect the fabric seal to be 100% water tight - they just expect the drains to cope with the little bit of water that gets through.

I think the front holes are fairly easy to see with the sunroof open, but I don't think I've ever seen the back ones - not that I've particularly looked for them...

Thats what i thought ken, but again i am not 100% on the Octy I

This shows the front and rear drain holes:

I think it'll be the same on the other side too, giving 4 pipes in total...

Thanks for all the info!

I will check out the drain pipes as soon as I can.

thanks

Andy

Cheers for that AJB; another mod to my Haynes (only bought it at Xmas) coming up!

I have an Octy I haynes, not that it is any use to me now :(

Thanks for info though :)

I checked the drain holes last night.

The front ones are clear. Decided against checking the rear just in case. (didnt want to have more water in the car!)

Left the car on the flat over night in heavy rain, although probably sheltered to some degree by the house, and no apparent leak.

Checked the roof again in the carpark at work and it actually looks like the roof isn't quite square in the hole. The passenger side seems to be further forward.

There is no way I'm playing with the adjustments myself!

Time for a dealer visit I think.

Andy

Where do these drain tubes come out? Anywhere near my damp seat belts?

By the looks of the exploded drawing, I'd say that the rear pair might.

  • Author

Not sure on the rear pair, but the fronts come out under the A pillar. Almost directly on the shutline for the front edge of the front door.

I would guess the rears come out of the C pillar due to the length of the sunroof mechanism.

I see what you mean; in which case I'd doubt that they could actually be blocked.

I'll have a look when the current hurricane passes!

When I say under the A pillar and C pillar they come out through the sill not at the top by the door. The front ones being just behind the mud flaps.

I would have thought it would be difficult for the rear ones to be blocked though as they are so far back in the roof space. Unless its grease I cannot see anything bigger than road dirt/dust getting in there.

Sorry to confuse.

Andy

Yeah Andy, I suppose the rears could get blocked at the bottoms. Which gives me another idea wrt my car, given just how wet it's been hereabouts the last ew weeks.

I would say A and B pillars ;)
