Fubared another gearbox possibly.

Featured Replies

A while back I had issues with my gearbox on my 1.4 16v Fabia (2001)

Clicky

Basicly the original problems were:

  • 1000-2700 revs there is a vibrating noise from the engine department - turned out to be the cam belt and tensioners screaming to be replaced
  • (1000-2700) and being in 4th gear, the gear k n o b vibrates. If I release the gas pedal or push the cluch down the vibrations stop, but as soon as I accelerate with the cluch out it vibrates again. As soon as the engine is out of 2700 revs at about 44mph in 4th the VIBRATIONS (edit) also stop.

I got the gearbox replaced for a new (reconditioned) gearbox by my Skoda dealer - because they didnt think it would be cost effective to remove the whole gearbox to locate the fault - under warranty about 5 months ago and the problems stopped - until about last week. I have now noticed that the same vibrations have returned and have got more severe in the last week and tonight it was horrendous and even loud. The vibrations are now at about 2700 revs and also only in 4th gear.

I have absolutly loads of exams at the mo so I dont have time to drop it off at the dealer until late next week but it does have a 2 year warranty (although after much pestering I still never got anything in writting).

Its also worth noting that I drive like a grandad, even my mates say that I am the most cautious and careful driver they know! So its not that I have been thrashing it either. Really concerned about this now so:

Anyone got any ideas?

Could it be that when the dealer removed the gearbox, and fitted the new one they packed a component with somesort of grease, and this has now worn - causing the vibrations to return?

Or is it time for a new gearbox again?

Sorry if it's a little off topic... but how the hell did you manage to get a 2 year warrenty with a 2001 car ?

the individual repair would have a warranty and it sounds more like a dual mass flywheel problem to me if you have one. just get it back to the dealer asap i'd say really.

Ahh, new gearbox (well, reconditioned) was put in by dealer because there was a fault with the one that was in it about 4~5 month ago.

They said that this new gearbox they put in will carry a two year parts and labour warranty.

The warranty is not with the car, just the gearbox

ah, I see.

Sounds like a DMF fault to me.

If they didn't replace a faulty DMF then it will appear again and again possibly damaging the clutch and gearbox.

Oh fudge :( So quite an urgent one then?

I hope they donts squirm out of sorting it, but they might do as the warranty was on the gearbox - not the DMF, but if its because they have changed the wrong part then I suppose its for them to pay for any damage induced by that mistake

If they do squirm out, which I doubt as they have been brilliant so far, how much is a new clutch & DMF + fitting @ dealer prices ?:o

Edit: Just googled DMF, and found you mean the flywheel:( I have seen some peoples repair bills of these on here before and I seriously pooing myself now as I dont have anywhere near enough money to sort it. Not only that, but my parents are off to buy an Octavia tomorrow and I seriously feel like telling them just to get a banger instead, as I was going to help them out with some money for it :(

If it is the flywheel, is this an urgent thing that needs doing?

Also, do you reckon I should get a second opinion from another garage before taking back to the dealer to get looked at?

I know the DMF was suggested, but is there a possibility it could be the dreaded piston rings?

A second opinion can't hurt...

The DMF can wait a little while, but I'd be saving up quick, or get an after market warrenty on your car that covers both the gearbox and flywheels then wait for the wear and tear clause to come in. Then just see what happens and wait for it to fail.

the 1.4 16v doesn't have a dual mass flywheel

the 1.4 16v doesn't have a dual mass flywheel

So does that rule it out as a possible cause?

Im going to phone up the "second opinion" garage to get them to look at it next week, as there is a couple of other bits that I want checking out too.

Then get it to the dealers either if the garage says its nothing to worry about or get it sorted asap - that way if anything does go tits up they were at least informed of the problem.

Like I say its only intermittent that it does it and only in 4th when it does do it, so its not too much of an annoyance and I could live with it if it doesnt need sorting out.

gearbox problems of this nature where you get vibration at certain speeds is often caused by dirty gearbox oil clogging up the syncro hubs.... the first thing to do is to flush and change the gear oil..

also dont forget it may be something external to the gearbox, like the linkage and one of the engine mounts

Yes I assumed (stupidly) you had a TDI....

So if there isn't a DMF you can't get DMF vibrations.

Update:

I took it back to the dealer and they noticed the vibration was there, but assured me that the problem was not what it was before

To stop the vibration, the mechanic returned the settings back to factory and packed the "ball" on the gearbox lever with some grease.

It is still shaking but was assured its probably nothing, and that I still have plenty of warranty time remaining so if it gets worse I can just take it back in

Thank you Derek Slacks once more
