How am I doing re tyre wear

Featured Replies

After 13,000 miles I'm down to 5mm on the fronts and 7mm on the rears, on the original contis. Just wondering how this compares to others experiences? What is the tread depth on new tyres?

Oops. How did that happen?? I appear to have somehow posted the same question twice! Can someone delete on of them please?

I got about 22,000 out of my first set of fronts - they were down to 3mm so had a bit more life still to go.

Sounds like they're wearing very nicely as I think they start off with 7mm of tread. I used to get about 20k out of my Fabia's fronts and 30-40k out of the rears, but then I do spend most of my life driving like a hooligan

Chris

New tyres are about 8mm I think, so your rears are holding up well!

im currently getting about 5k max out of my 306  i dont drive hard all the time either

Excellent, thanks guys. It sounds like I'm doing ok. I used to get 20k (fronts) and 40k (rears) on my previous car (a Pug 406 2.2 diesel), so I am hoping to better this with the VRS. I don't drive particularly slowly/carefully so I guess even better is possible.

What you should do is every 5k miles change the rears to the fronts that way all 4 will wear down at the same rate then when you need new tyres you get a new set of 4 and that way you always get bigger discounts.

   That's not good at all. It sounds like your 306 has a serious tracking problem! Do the tyres wear evenly across the width of the tyre?

I thought that was now frowned upon?

Good idea. Maybe I'll do that. It looks like the rears are going to last forever otherwise!!

What can happen is due to age the rears will perish sooner than they will wear out.

I had a mate who stupidly ran rear tyres for 90k on his saxo 1.1 and they were 10 years old, the bad thing was he had a blow out on one of them on a motorway luckily while in the slow lane.
