suspension springs

my fabia 1.4 went in for mot a couple of weeks ago and one of things that needed doing was the replacement of the offside front spring as there was a part of it missing, driving on monday morning i heard a bang followed by the sound of something metal falling off the car, i pulled over to find that a part of the near side spring had broken off. is this a common thing? or is it just just a faulty batch??
