IE6 on XP driving me nuts

Featured Replies

If I click a link it usually loads as 'normal'.

But, if I open as a new page there is now often a 5-15 second delay before the new page appears, then loads OK.

Only been doing it a few days - driving me nuts - any ideas?

Thats internet explorer for you. just randomly out of no where it decides that its going to do absolutely nothing.

There is a fix for this behaviour and I have a file at work that resets all the registry and file settings for internet explorer.

On occasion though it has killed I.E completely.

My advice would be either install I.E 7 and hope it doesnt happen in that

or and this is what I would do. I would install Mozilla Firefox and use that from now on.

IE7 still sux for compatibility with a lot of sites, and our MIS department doesn't support it at all. Must admit my mix of FF2 and IE6 seems to be behaving well ;)

Thanks for the comments, least got something to try now - I can see a wasted weekend looming - grrrrr. Second thoughts, I'll try another browser for a bit.

Tried every suggestion/fix I could find, no virus/wares found. Still the same.

Try installing Avant Browser (I use it in preference to any other browser e.g. tried virtually everything going and this thing has so many useful addons that it beats Opera Firefox IE6 etc) to see if it cures your problem.

It is freeware and a 'bolt-on' i.e. it uses IE as its base.

Avant Browser :: Home

1.8MB

If it doesn't fix the problem - simply uninstall it.

I'm now using Avant Anonymouse - it's like greased lightning in comparison, multiple new windows - instantly - that'll do me just fine - cheers

Does all sorts of things - saves login details and on and on................

BTW Important - under Tools, disable ActiveX. Most web sites will work without. Some you can go on use the ActiveX to very rapidly download little nasties. I forgot to re-enable the Disable ActiveX button recently, went on one site and the next news the computer went into a reboot cycle you couldn't get out of.

Luckily I run Norton Ghost so I was just minutes away from a full reinstall of a backup, back onto Drive C.

Will do - thanks again, you've saved me a lot of nail chewing!

Do some reading up on Norton Ghost & then get it (preferably Ghost 2003) - best thing since sliced bread. You will have to partition your hard drive / s, though.

Whatever messes with my system, whether it be me - inveterate tinkerer - or malware, I know I can be back up and running in less than 10 minutes.

Ghost is good but there is better out there. We use ghost at work for our imaging needs, but I do remember another piece of software that was quicker and also you could take an image of your windows drive while in windows, Now thats clever.

If I remember what it was called I will put it in here.

Acronis True Image - tried it, a bit buggy, not as easy to use in certain aspects.

Ghost 10 allows hot imaging - but quite a few people (in the know) have voiced concerns.
