Drove a new Golf GTI today

Featured Replies

Quite nice, I must admit. Dad's just taken delivery of a black GTI. Only done 500 miles so I couldn't give it some beans. I love the torquey nature of the engine - I could really drive it like I would drive my own diesel, and it would still pull low revs, and yet have the same top-end grunt.

Was impressed how smartly a 3rd gear 40 - 80mph overtake manouvere was done, and the general handling/poise of the car was spot on. A bit rougher than the 2.0 TDI from before, mainly due to the suspension and 225/45 R17 tyres, compared to the 205/50 R16s from before.

Inside it's pretty sweet. Steering wheel is well designed to allow a good grip at ten to two, and it's got a solid heavy feel to it too, which I quite like. Light steering is always something I feel lets down the Fabia a bit.

It looks SO smart too. People look at you in the street, even though the car is totally quiet in reality. The front end looks nice and mean, and the alloys are decent - easy to clean as well as I helped Dad wash it down when we got back from the test run.

One let down? 100mph indicated is 91mph gps. As per my test on the local private road to Dad's place. ;) I told Dad to maybe go for a different tyre size next to even out the imbalance. Also, it didn't "quite" have the same thump of power/torque that mines does - but then it was only running in, so to be expected.

 from me, and I imagine the Octy2 vRS with the same lump is just as nice.

Must be a VW thing - my 1.9TDI Golf is very similar - an indicated 70mph (I don't have access to a private road :( ) is a GPS 65mph

I thought it was normal for speedos to over-read? Legally I believe they can over-read by 10%, but must not under-read.

Speedometers usually over read by 10 % or so, designed that way.

A friend of mine has had one for a year now and he loves it. I had a go in it and was very impressed too. But then you should be for the price.

Incidentally i had my car indicating 150 mph on the speedo yesterday and my GPS reported 145 mph.

All on a private road obviously.:)

i like those new golf gti's too, they look just right imho!!

Oh indeed it is, especially with a few tweaks ;)

Not that you know! :P Dad is already aware of the 230 S.E version of the GTI, and I've dropped enough hints about a simple 250bhp chip. However, he thinks the car is damn fine as it is, so I think he won't touch it. I will attempt to convince him otherwise as time goes on.

I know that I need to raise the bar somewhat now - The old man is catching me up. :D

Agreed

Unfortunately 250 from a chip, seems unreasonable.

Much that it pains me to admit but Aaron is right. 250bhp from a remap is just not possible but it is still worth every penny!

Why not??? You can remap a 150bhp 1.8T to nearly 200Bhp with a remap???

150hp 1.8T uses the K03 turbo. Not the K03s.

They will remap to 180 - or 190 with a good few mods on top. ;)

Sorry to dissapoint you!

They're completely different beasts to drive - I actually preferred the Octy to the GTi  - Go have a drive in one and see what you think in comparison...

Early 150's use the K03 but after around 2001 excluding the Ibiza all 150's used the K03s.

Because the 150bhp version is de-tuned by VAG. The engine is identical to the 1.8T fitted to the VRS.

different turbo as well phil:D

Hope he got it for a good price. They seem to sell for silly money second hand!

Lovely cars though

different turbo as well phil:D

Well they obviously made a mistake when they built my 150bhp Elegance because it has the same turbo as the VRS.

Come to think of it they must be prety careless because Eddy and Bengie also have "150bhp Elegance" Octavias with the same turbo

have a quick google to find out the differnce between a k03 and a k03s then!

AUQ - 180bhp - fitted to vRS

ARX - 150bhp - fitted to 4X4

AUM - 150bhp - fitted to standard FWD

all of the above are fitted with the k03s

The k03 was fitted to some Golf MK4 and the early Octavia (pre 2001, pre Elegance spec)

ahh, i'm begging your pardon.... that's where i got confused....

i've got two 20v turbo engines sat on the floor in the brothers garage, and they've both got different turbos....

Why is it, that they remapped to 190-200?

They didn't. Only old K03 cars did. Even getting a 180 doesn't guarantee getting a K03s though as older audis and seats have the K03 on the 180's.

BTW apologies to the OP for how far off topic this is going.

I don't mind.

To answer a question above, he got it brand new for about £18k I think - a good few k on RRP if I remember right. Through drivethedeal.

Isn't Denis, DGW, running about 230 odd through his 4x4 turbo?
