Fabia vrs oil light flashing red

Featured Replies

Came back from a few weeks holiday and had to boost the battery on my 2004 Fabia vrs. Once started, it idled fine - no warning lights. Let it idle for a while but when I went to take it for a drive the oil can light started flashing red. Seems to be triggered by higher revs (like above 2500). Oil level is showing on the stick mid-range. Manual says oil level is yellow light and flashing red is oil pressure. What could be the cause? Was fine when I left.

Does it do it consistantly? Have you done any miles in it since finding this?

If its flashing red above 2500 its low oil pressure, best bet dont drive it until its checked out.

Haven't gone anywhere. At idle it's fine. As you rev it it will come on. Will try topping up to be sure, but as it is red (and not yellow) it seems to be pressure related. Very odd.

It will show fine as idle as it wont pick up the oil pressure switch until over 1500 rpm.

I doubt its got anything to do with the oil level if its half way up the dipstick. Id say either there is a problem with the switch or you are lacking pressure.

Before you start it again I would check for MIF [metal in filter] if your're techically minded/capable.

To do this properly you need a Pet Ether flush and filter system and microscope!!! Visually unless it's proper screwed you wont see anything.

Top it up and see what happens.

Are you saying the oil pressure sensor only works over 2500 rpm?

Sounds like the oil pressure switch/wiring to me

No 1500 rpm, sorry my error.

I'm more familiar with the old "idiot lights" that would flicker ON at idle (due to low pressure at idle) and then go OFF at higher revs (as oil pressure increased). How is the Fabia's sensor different? Does it not detect low oil pressure at idle at all? Unless the oil pump is broken, the oil pressure should be higher at higher revs, correct?

If its a genuine indication then continually running it with do further damage.

Check the filter then if its clean run it with a bourdon gauge in the LOP switch port.

Dont take any chances with oil related problems, it is already really high spec oil (I know most modern ones are) - if the car is under warranty I'd get it towed to the dealer. Why risk it.

Hopefully it will just be the switch, they are known to go wrong, but as already mentioned - if it isn't, damage will be done for sure.

Good luck :)

Turned out to be a rat had chewed through all the wires! I have a feeling this is going to be expensive (but better than a new engine).
