writen off, personalised plates

Featured Replies

hi guys, i posted about having an accident last friday in my clio, it has been classed as a write off due to its age etc. anyway i had a private/personalised number plate on it, i recieved a letter today from the total loss department. it refers to my car reg number as my private plate.

Now does anyone know what i do in terms of gettin my plates back? or have i now lost them due to the vehicle been written off?

thanks

I don't know but won't you have to pay DVLA to either keep the private plates retained or transferred to another car:confused:

Phone the DVLA and speak to them about it.

If you just leave everything alone then the plate could be lost , but it is possible to get it put on retention until you get a new car.

You should be able to get them put on a retention certificate , IIRC you may have to pay , although I cannot remember how much it is now.

IIRC its about £80

This happened to me when my missus decided to cause a pile up on her way home in my car one night three years ago. As long as you transfer the number off before it is officially written off you should be ok, i knew mine was a goner so I transferred the plate off sharpish but I was told by the garage the car was taken to that I might lose the plate. Things may have changed but either way try and get the plate transferred off the car.

It will cost you 80 beer tokens to transfer the number off either onto retention or to another car.

Good luck buddy.

its

Ive seen this go both ways, my mate at work wrote of his car and they wouldnt let him have the plates back as he has been paid out for the car by the insurance. He found out where the car went after and had to purchse the car of the salvage company. Ended up costing him alot of money in the end to get his plates back.

Another mate wrote of his motor and he got it back eventually after about 6 months of silly beggars from the insurance ona retension certificate.

You can insure your number plate against this, but its another cost to pay annually.

If you don't mind me asking what is the value of the clio I would guess fairly low.

If it is under £1k or maybe a bit more you might want to just not claim and repair it on the cheap yourself, or buy the wreck back so you can keep the plates.

well i'v recieved the cheque from the insurance, i didnt expect any more than 550, but i got 900 for it in the end, havent put the cheque in the bank yet, going to ring dvla and total loss section of insurance company and get it sorted before it all goes through as official :P

cheers guys

You should put the plate on retention before the car is written off,but to do this you will need the V5C document.
