Where is the MAF

Featured Replies

Hello all.

I have been reading the the threads on here about a problem my wife 2001 110tdi Octavia has.

The problem being extreme lack of power.

Im thinking (from what I have read) it could be a MAF problem, a VNT (is this some kind of variable vane mechanism?) or

(I'll have to explain this as I dont know what it is called)

theres a component at the rear drivers side of the engine bay in the inlet tract with an actuator, actuator arm and what looks like a diaphragm on top if it.

This is what I suspect could be at fault as on idle this thing makes a rythmic chirping noise plus the shaft (that is on the end of the actuator arm) that looks like it controls a valve within the component (the component with with the metal diaphragm on top) shows quite a lot of oil witness as if the seal is failing.

My plan is to get the fault codes read, then clean/replace the MAF and then remove/ inspect/ replace this actuator assembly.

Does this sound like a reasonable approach?

Also I would be very grateful if could someone describe or post a pic of the MAF please. I

Thanks in advance for your help

Ryan

the maf is located between the airbox and the engine...

Thankyou very much.

So I just give the MAF as good clean - any particular cleaner to use or avoid?

Could you also tell me the name of the part that is just above and to the left of the filler cap please.

Cheers

any decent carb/intake cleaner aerosol can will do... the part above and to the left of the oil filler cap is the egr valve

What does your wife drive like? There's a known problem with the variable geometry control on the 110 sticking if it never gets exercised, so if she's a gentle driver the inlet side of the turbo may need cleaning.
