Wonky Wipers.....

Featured Replies

So I get in my Octy yesterday, and the wipers barely move. Then they move a little more. then slowly go across the screen. I flick up to the top speed, and they stop dead. Back on slow, they excruciatingly make they're way across the screen, stopping several times as if to catch their breath like an Asthmatic Athelete. All this accompanied by a terrible sound of something mechanical clunking/grating.....

cheked the fuses -which are fine.

Anyone any theories, and whats more, know how much it's going to cost to fix?

Search through this forum.....there was something similar posted ....some linkage being knackered.

Did a quick look but couldn't find the right one.

I have heard, from an Octavia owner who is not a Briskoda member, of the wiper motor needing replacement as well (although this seems not to be the problem in you case). The windscreen wipers don't seem to be as robust as the rest of the Octavia.

Mine skip a bit at "motorway speed". I notice that the vRS has a sort of aeroplane to push the wipers against the 'screen. Is there any aftermarket solution to this, or is this Skoda's way of saying "you're driving too fast in the rain"? :D

... and the phrase is, "an asthmatic ant with some heavy shopping". Don't you know your Blackadder? ;)

Si,

you can get the Bosch aerofoil type replacement wipers from Halfords...

well, not to that level.......

and as an asthmatic, anyyhing would have got the message across :D

any ideas or worst case cost?

Javaman,

Do they work OK if you lift them up? If so then it could be a stiff linkage pivot or motor. Is it a sudden thing or have they been progressively getting worst?

relatively sudden. a few weeks back they had a brief slow session, but sorted itself out before i'd even got off the drive. No, lifting them makes no difference.

I'm really just looking to scope how much i'm going to be out of pocket, as the garage haven't got back to me yet.......

Sounds like it could be the motor - I don't know if this can be replaced individually or if it is part of the whole linkage assembly. Any ideas fellow Briskodians?

If it does need a new motor, then this will cost circa

If they behave like this when the wipers are off the screen it's almost certainly spindle seizure. The spindle seals break down and water gets in and gradually corrodes inside the spindle housing. Remove the wiper arms (might be very difficult to get off and may require a puller). Try dribbling plus-gas down each spindle, leave for a bit and run the motor. With motor running dribble more plus-gas followed by WD40 down the spindle. If it frees up it won't be a permanent cure but you may be able to replace the seals.

I have seen several posts regarding wiper problems. I had the same, they kept stopping!! I trickled some oil down the wiper arm stub, just where it goes through bonnet.....PROBLEM SOLVED..maybe worth trying before taing the car to bits or replacing the wiper motor.

Javaman - concur with all the theories about spindle seizure - that's what had happened to mine. Removed wiper mechanism, dismantled and regreased spindles, now fine. It's not hard. Try Jeffrey's suggestion of oil down the spindles first, although experience suggests that will only provide a temporary fix - the corrosion needs cleaning off really.

this was replaced some time ago, but intereting point about corrosion - one of the spindles was clearly not liking the rain and water, though it didn't look to serious at the time.

Ah well, you live and learn.

If changing source champion VX series blades. They are hard to get but beat all the others hands down. Not only do they have an aerofoil, the underside of this acts like a venturi at speed to really shift water off the screen. Been a very heavy rain and spray at speed and get a clear screen on normal mode, very really do I use mental mode!

I had a set of these and found them rubbish. The drivers side one squeaked at the top of its travel. Also during motorway driving I found the water seemed to get sprayed onto the windscreen due to the blade, straight after the wiper had already clear the area.

I got Bosch ones there a couple of months ago and I find them excellent.
