PD100, resistor box and snow

Featured Replies

What a cr4p day I've had ...

Too much poke at low revs to be able to maintain forward progress due to wheel spin (even with new tyres less than 1k old) ...

... and a frozen bonnet catch so I couldn't remove the box !!

It's the width of the tyres that'll ruin things here. Nice narrow skinny little tyres are best for cutting through snow rather than wider ones spreading the weight of the front of the car over a wider surface area thus reducing the pressure.

Also new tyres with less than 1k have not got much grip anyway ;)

Move off in 2nd and ease the clutch out....

Agree with Steve. Diesels don't need any accelerator input to move so stick it in the highest gear you can (2nd prob best) and let the car pull itself along....

Yep, tried that ... got to 3rd gear and gave up.

The power box thingy gives a very brutal gob of torque at around 1k rpm that just send the wheels spinning no matter what I try.

Sat with the engine running long enough to get the bonnet open last nigh, box is now off and it's much easier to drive in these conditions ... feels bloody slow though!!

High gear, little gas and no booting it once your going

I believe the advantage of a proper digital box is that it doesn't overfuel low down, hence preserving your transmission, also enabling it to be driven in such conditions and not gumming up turbo vane mechanisms (if present).

I wonder what resistor was in there? Mine was certainly wasn't that brutal low down :D

Best car I've had for driving in the snow was a Vauxhall Nova 1.0. 135 section tyres, 45bhp, no power steering and not a lot of weight....

1K?! Are you sure? - can't be very nice to drive any of the time if that's the case. Can't imagine the 'box and clutch lasting that long either. Or the turbo for that matter.

I find it pretty easy to get into 3rd and 20mph without needing the accelerator. Did it tonight actually, come back from the garage, as Manchester seems to be getting something approaching proper snow this evening.

Actually it IS lovely to drive ... just like a tractor :)

Keeps you awake in multi-storey car parks though.
