I assume the water pump was changed when all the trouble started? They can give problems. The impeller are made of plastic and can spin on the shaft if they break and the coolant wont circulate properly.

It's got a metal impeller pump - the gunk re-appearing though strongly suggests oil is getting in again though, which considering head was checked twice (and skimmed once) radiator was replaced, oil/water heat exchanger was changed, and the coolant was virtually clean when I picked it up is not good :(

Gutted for you.

In hindsight it sounds like a new complete engine from the start would have been the way to go - maybe even one from a scrapped vRS which would not have cost more than £1500. (Well, it's what I paid for my entire conversion almost, engine & box had only done 7360 miles)

Totally gutted for you fella... Really does sound like new block time. Feel sorry for the guys at APS too. :(

Good luck getting this sorted mate.

It sucks in more ways than you could imagine ;)

The worst thing is that I know APS put a lot of effort into getting it right, and it was looking good as well - having replaced all bits besides the block, it seems that the block is the only remaining thing.

Massive pain that is gonna be. I'm supposed to have my annual review on Monday, which I'm gonna have to do by phone instead, and on Tuesday I may have to ask for my father in law to give me a lift to the office so I can do my job going to Holland Tue/Wed. Really quite frustrating.

Still - all I can do is hope APS & I can hook up soon and sort something out, it's gonna cost me a fortune though regardless of how flexible they are as a block is a new part which I'll have to purchase, even if they are very, very good on the labour & getting a courtesy car arranged :)

How much is a genuine new block? Surely a second hand engine/recon is the way forward?

Will the 2.0 block fit?

A new block is around £1200(complete bottom end)

Yep - which is a lot of money again :(

Been in touch with APS and they will sort it out - somehow :)

I would think you can pick up a 2.0 TDI or TFSI with the bits for a lot less than that esp if you buy a whole car that has been written off from somewhere then take the engine.

Would think that should fit with custom brackets, and be a lot more tuneable in PD140 or even PD170 form if you could ditch the DPF on the latter. In terms of the electrics of course, well I don't have a clue how hard that is.

Still gutted for you.

Problem is that you'd have to match it to the gearbox etc, which ain't gonna be a straight fit - I did consider that option though I must admit, but I reckon it's gonna end up being a bottom end, maybe second hand, maybe new, not sure yet. Pricing up is being done at the moment, and it depends a fair bit on labour charges etc as well.

Could this be the first

I reckon Jason's beaten me to that :P

I reckon Jason's beaten me to that :P

:iagree: and thats with no serious repair issues like you've had (yet... i hasten to add :D)

Just make sure that propane is set up by an expert - detonation = f*cked engine..

Indeed - I'll tell Mike how to adjust it come remap time. It's set to 2/3 max flow at the moment, with a 4psi start point - To get the most out of it, it may need setting on full blast? As long as the engine can cope with the extra - certainly has been fine with the 2/3 for the last few thou'

  • Author

I reckon it's not so much whether the engine can cope - it's the detonation side of things that kills it - if you can avoid detonation at all times you should be able to safely get a lot of nice power *and fuel economy for the derv side* and it should be great. However based on my car I reckon if it's NOT set up right, it can cause major damage :(

Dealer just phoned me and told me that after the turbo replacement they found swarf in intercooler so it's having a new intercooler as well :(

Another day :(

Should this be in a different thread?

It was kind of a empathy post :D

 - I know the feeling ;)

Ok a little update then.

Once again APS is doing the best they can.

Basically they're sourcing a different engine for me (second hand due to costing), which I will be purchasing. They will do all the work swapping stuff over etc, hybrid turbo, baffled sump, etc etc etc. I should end up with some spares like the sump and the head, including valves et al.

Considering the labour charges would be about 25 hours and this is not gonna be charged, and I'm actually driving their transporter van at the moment (and experience in its own right :D ) - absolutely doing their utmost to keep me mobile and to get the problem sorted

Hopefully this time we'll get lucky 100% :D

Hopefully you can get an engine alone - no box, turbo, etc for around £500/£600. :) I got one (pd150) for about £50, but it was cooked - had a good set of injectors in it though.

Man you must be gutted about this - I've read up a bit and that's a lot of time of the road really

Yeah it's not the greatest but APS are doing their best to make it as painless as possible. Once they're done this time around, things should improve ;)
