retaining screw for front disks

Featured Replies

Ok, I started to change my disks and pads this morning (before the rain set in), but I was unable to get the retaining screw out... seems to be truely stuck in :finger:

I tried an impact driver, but that just resulted in the head rounding off  so I drilled the head off, but I can't get the stub out.... so I left it there and reassembled with out... a bit of a pain but the wheel is back on. I imagine I will have the same problems on the other side too.

Any suggestions for getting these little gits out? I wondered about drilling the whole thing out? But did not fancy that challenge today.

Plus I started on the passenger side and I note that has the wear indicator there... I thought it was meant to be on the drivers side? Or does the Elegance have them on both sides? My replacement pads only have wires for one front pad.

When i did the 312mm upgrade i had bother getting the retaining screws out. I ended up using a sort of centre punch thing and a hammer to tap them undone with. They did get a little mauled but i managed to get them back in ok. I am going to get some new ones sometime.

Not sure what you are going to do if you have drilled the head out now. Perhaps a small drill to dril the rest of the thread out, but i suspect you could damage the thread maybe doing this????

I only had a wear indicator on the passenger side on my elegance so i guess it is normal.

Are you putting bigger brakes on or just like for like?

Just done like for like. On the drivers side, the retaining screw came out ever-so easily, even though it looked as if it had thread-lock on it. Unfortunately I am not blessed many tools at my house - I normally go back to my parents for more complicated jobs. I guess what I need to is reverse tap and try and remove... maybe when it is not raining!

I have just swapped liked for like - i'll take a picture of the old pads later - there was not much left - I have nearly even warn through the indicator cable!

Time for a lunchtime beer in town I think :-)

You could have taken my old 288mm discs off my hands. They still had loads of use left in them. As did the pads.

When i put the bigger discs on, the pads i used did not have wear indicators so i had to make a "dongle" to plug into where the wires would have gone.

The retaining screwes are sheared off on mine, they were like that when I bought the car and I can't say I am bothered enough to replace them.

My RS has wear indicators on the near side only.

cool.. at least I am not alone in having issues!

I see it most days. A good 'tap' with a hammer before trying to undo them will do the trick usually. Failing that if the impact driver doesnt get them out I stick a wheel bolt back in, rotate the disc into a suitable position and hit the disc with my 3lb hammer from the back. This usually sends the head pinging off somewhere.

Dont tbh normally replace them as the parts dept never has them. It only stops the disc from moving when the wheel is off anyhow, not critical for it to be there.

Superb, Passat and A4 etc dont bother with them.

to get the stub out get a set of easy-outs they look like a really course tap but in reverse you will need to drill a hole the correct size for the easy-out then screw the it in (LH thread) it will bite the stub and unscrew it ...you will need to get new screws but, they must be there for a reason...
