Performance Air Filters - vRS

Featured Replies

So you won't fit a filter and risk the warranty but you'll be comfortable with a remap

Fair point, but at least the remap has some benefits!

hi, ive just ordered a k&n panel filter for my fabia vrs from demon tweeks, i think these filters are great having had one on each of my 4 previous cars all vag,s no probs with dealers at service time, the filters also give you that little bit more oooommff = 1 or 2 bhp

Now got my vRS TDI and opened up the airbox; part no. on the filter is 1K0 129 620 D, which matches up with Awesome Sarah's and vrStu's posts earlier in this thread.

Measured it as well; external is 341mm x 135mm - this corresponds with K&Ns part no. 33-2865. Same filter as the other 2.0L TDI in the VAG group!

Now; do I get a K&N or a Pipercross? Hmmm .......

I can't believe that the replacement air filter will make a bit of difference. The only partial advantage may be that it is cleanable and so no longer a service consumable but is it worth loosing your warranty over?

Steve

It's a consumeable item, it won't invalidate your warranty.

Furthermore, the notion of a warranty becoming invalid is a bit of a red herring. Any modification you make to your car that partly or wholly contributes to a fault will typically mean the dealer will not fix the fault under warranty. However if the fault is unrelated to the modification the warranty will still cover it.

I'd find an ITG replacement rather than K&N. The ITG filters are a lot better and are recommended by the guys in the know.

We race V8's and the air filters make a big difference. I also fitted an ITG on my Discovery and it improved response.

Having done some more research, and being swayed by its filtration ability and minimal oil effect (and the lack of filtration of foam filters - pipercross, ITG etc), I boughyt the K&N 33-2865 filter for my vRS TDI.

Only took two ticks to fit.

However, I now find it hard to know if there is any difference apart from the (placebo) feel good factor. Short of putting a car on a rolling road, before & after, any difference is hard to prove in day to day normal driving.

I have done one test. With the OE filter I checked several times the 'instant mpg' on full throttle acceleration in 4th gear; between about 2,750rpm to 3,750rpm the reading stabalised at 10.4mpg. With the K&N I get the same 10.4mpg reading!

In theory; if the K&N was giving more air the ECU would provide more fuel and TBH I was expecting a reading of 10.3mpg or perhaps 10.2mpg.

Is my theory wrong? or does the K&N not make any particular difference? apart from the 'feel good' factor.

Are there any Performance Air Filters available for the new vRS yet?

The TDi PD Model, and preferably replacement element panel filters, not cone filter induction kit?

I know you said "not cone filters" but thought you might like to know that I have recently found that K & N do one that ought to fit the vRS TDI (in fact all 2.0L TDIs).

I did some more research on K & N's website and found (I'm sure it wasn't there a couple of months ago) that they do one of their 57i induction kits for the Octavia 2.0L L4 DSL (TDI), part number 57-0618, details here:-

http://knfilters.com/search/product.aspx?Prod=57-0618

Having looked at their .pdf brochure of the 'Installation Instructions' it seems to be the right item and the photos are very comprehensive.

Having further trawled around a few on-line retailers price is around

Mmm is there any people in the know , that know about these

I thought I knew quite a bit , but never heard about these

But hey ho , probably because I have seen so many people but K&N , Pipercross and Green that they have never needed to buy another make

One of the main advantages with the filters is the fact that they will never need replacing again

The OEM filter VAG say every 40k but we replace every 20k

The OEM filter retails at apprx

On my last car (Pug 206 gti) i did some research on rollers with different filters. There wasn't any difference with K&N panel filter or OEM paperfilter. Also tried pipercross conefilter and it only lost power. I got best power gains by removing original air intake pipe and fitting new larger diameter pipe. I removed my left hand side foglight and made ramair cone that fitted in foglight hole. With that construction and with OEM paperfilter powergains was approx. 5-6 bhp.

My point is that i don't think that fitting any makers cotton/foamfiltters will bring any powergains. So no K&N filters for me. :)

Sure if OEM filter gets stuffed with dirt it can reduce airflow to engine but at least it shows that filter works and prevents dirt getting to the engine.

I ordered a Pipercross one from AwesomeGTi,

Ageeeeeeeees ago just after i started this thread lol

It arrived 2 days after the engine lunched itself, so is sat there waiting to go into something...

I can't vouch for the warranty part, but for the difference in performance:- I would expect you could see about 5bhp from a K&N panel filter.

I had one on my old Escort GTI, and there is a bar graph on the back of the packaging showing air flow through a standard paper filter, standard foam filter, then through the K&N panel filter. The air flow through the K&N is nearly double that of the standard filters. i.e. More Air = More Power

I'll see if I can dig the box out and put a pic up, I'm sure I still have it.
