More mods or 20yr old hot hatch??

Featured Replies

I have been giving some thought to possibly getting something along the lines of a Mk2 Golf Gti or a Scirroco or possibly a Corrado.

My budget would ony be about 1.5 to 2k but i have been looking on some Golf enthusiast sites and i think a MK2 is a goer for that price.

However in the ocld light of day i have started thinking that perhaps it would be best to get more mods done to my car instead and then i would only still have one lot of tax, insurance and servicing costs to pay for.

There is something about a Mk2 GTi or Scirroco that takes my fancy.

What would i get done to my car for say

Rob - talk to bengie ;) see what he thinks.

I recon a classic shape Saab 900 T16s is called for ;)

i am in the proces of taking a holiday from skoda due to my 20yr old hot hatch finally being on the road so your thread couldn't be better timed from my prospective :D

if your not bothered with the extra noise/smell(possibly), normally lower mpg and the rattles/knocks that come with an older car then definitly go for the old skool cool definitly.

i am currently mostly driving round in a 1986 D reg mazda 323 gtx and its great fun :D i would say think further afield than a mk2 golf or something as there are much faster and more entertaining cars out there for around the £1500 mark, my mazda has cost me about that much +tax/insurance, the mpg is awefull, the stereo is terrble, its horribly loud, the gear change is a bit crunhy but i effing love it :D :D

to make your car noticbly faster your going to have to spend a lot more than £1500 if you have already upgraded the suspension/brakes and had it remapped so i'd leave the octavia as a comfortable and competant cruiser and get a mad loud old car :)

I'd sack off the Corrado and go for a Mk2 GTi. If you can get one in standard form and in Oak Green that would be nice. A 16v is what I would go for but in the real world many people prefer the 8v.

Should you want some this 'noisey' and you do fancy a Corrado I would advise you to steer well clear of the G60. The 2.8 run out model is the one to have. Avoid auto too!

How Dare You Sir! You obviously don't know much about C's! Why stay clear of the G60?????? If maintained The G-lader is very reliable, true you need to budget about

Sorry beeftech, Yeah got my fact wrong there on the old engine capacity......been a long time since I was taking a real interest and kinda plucked my facts off the top of my head. You are right it was the 'Storm' version I was refering to.

Regarding superchargers. I drove a G40 and know a fair bit about what occurs when they blow....and they do! Yes a G60 sounds great but can be noisey inside, back in the 1990's hard to get rid of them two. The bloke I got my G40 from (Dodgy Guy in Manchester, couldn't shift is yellow one). However, there is a great rareity factor now.

Yes you are right £500 will sort you a rebuild. That's what it cost me in the 90s at BRM in Lemington Spa, who were the only people licenced to do the work at the time. However, it didn't stop the thing blowing accelarating up from 50mph on the St. Helens link road. For a new unit I was looking at about £1500 plus fitting on a car only worth about £3,500. You can run a G40/60 car without the charger but not much fun. Plus you should see the mess a blow charger makes of the whole engine. The bits of casing shatter and go everywhere. I sold my G40 based on the principal, it would happen again and I needed reliability. The mechanic, a mate of mine bought it, and now keeps it to drive on high days and holidays.

Hence I would not recommend a G60 as a daily driver. However, as a young lad I was captivated by the Corrado. I sat in one after listening to a salesman do his pitch in Corkhills in Crosby. I was bying a 1ltr Polo at the time, second hand. I thought then I would get one once I could afford it and I agree, shape and poise wise on the road there is little to touch it even today. Sadly, I needed some practicallity and the Corrado never made it onto my drive.

The one that got away!

You may well get lucky then. The one or two I have seen in just recently have been in very bad shape. But I guess its the same as the MK2 Golf anyhow, good and bad.

Man, whats going on with Those Gay Mudflaps????

A 205 gti is something that i have looked at too. A freind of mine had one about 19yrs ago and i remember it being really good fun. But what are they like reliability wise???

I also fancy a Golf VR6, they seem quite good value. Also like Mazda MX-5's

Need to do more research.

How much is insurance likely to cost me for something like a 205 GTi??? I may only want to use it for 6 months of the year??
