Fabia vRS advice please:

Featured Replies

Hi folks, i was given a link to this site from my old buddy Ross Clarke (Techie), liking it so far!

Just looking for some advice really,

Ive put a deposit down on a Fabia vRS, 2600 miles, already remapped to 180bhp by star performance. Sitting in my local dealer for

Hi Sten. So is this car coming from Barnett's in Kirkcaldy? That would be the nearest dealer to Star wouldn't it? Are they covering the car under the Skoda warranty in spite of it having been remapped? I'm also interested that it's got a claimed 180 bhp since my wife is picking up a new Fabia vRS next month and we've already been muttering about a trip to see Jim Curley at Star. I've had my Golf serial port tuned by them and it made a huge difference.

1) As to residuals, it will in part depend upon how many miles a year you're going to do. ISTR the dealer quoting me 50% after 3 years and average mileage on a Fabia, so after 5 years you might expect to return 30% to 35% I would think, ie between

The car is from the new dealer in Paisley, they also have a Octy from star running 230bhp.

I only went in for a broshure but saw the fabby... drove it.. and put a deposit down then and there!

As for the warranty - i asked the salesman and the manager and they both said that it would be fine and that their equipment wouldnt even pick up the change?

Glad you like the car. They are great fun

That's a moot point. Theoretically, you should tell the insurers that the car has been "chipped". If ever you have a mishap which would require the insurance to pay out, they'd probably do whatever they can to void the cover.

Now if the "chip" or remap or whatever you want to call it is vouched for by the Skoda dealership, you should be OK because they could say it's endorsed by Skoda bla bla bla. But if they say "we wouldn't even know it's there", it's kind of worrying if the insurance company were to ask the dealership about the existance of a modded ECU and the dealership were to deny any knowledge of it!

If you do want to go down the "telling the insurer it's been modded" route, I'd recommend liverpool victoria. They're the favoured ones here and cover you for all your mods, whether performance related or not (as long as you don't change the CC of it!)

Theoretically, you should tell the insurers that the car has been "chipped".
There is nothing theoretical about telling your insurer about mods - you have a contractual duty to inform your insurer about all material facts concerning your policy. Failure to do so could invalidate your policy. Moreover, it is an offence under the Road Traffic Acts to make a false statement or withhold any material information for the purpose of obtaining a certificate of motor insurance.

(Norwich Union Direct customers are specifically reminded of this information each time they take out car insurance).

should have mentioned - i work for an insurance company so i know the score.

Ive decided not to take the fabia tho. i cant justify spending that amount of cash on a car, and i need a bigger car really so i might get a passat TDi and get that chipped. we shall see, thanks for the advice tho and keep up the good work :)

If you need a bigger car than a fabia, and you're thinking of the passat, does that mean you've ruled out the tavia? Nearly as big as the passat (kind of bora size equivalent I think), but a lot cheaper.

dont get me wrong i do like them but i would constantly have people trying to climb in the back as ALL the taxis round here are octavias. shame really.
