Skoda newbie here.

Featured Replies

Just swapped my Passat TDI estate for an 2005 Octavia TDI estate yesterday - seems a little bit rougher but then ........

Anyway my first question was what the heck is Maxidot - but I've found that same questions asked by somebody else recently and as I couldn't make much sense of the answer I think perhaps I don't have Maxidot. So, without Maxidot is there a similar interface somewhere? Being able to set the windows to close when it rains seems good. My Passat would sometimes decide to open all of the windows - a bit disconcerting to come back to it in a car park and find it in that state.

So, second question - the audio manual mentions that there is an auxiliary input - how does one get to that? I can't see any obvious socket. I'm missing my USB and SD source options that I had before.

Thanks

Hi and welcome

I suspect the aux input is for you CD changer if you have one. If yours is a 2007 model it should have an Ipod connector in the jumbo box I think.

Someone else will know for sure though...

Thanks - it's a 2005 and does have a CD changer. Other irritation is that only CDA format seems to be handled - I thought MP3 file support was pretty standard - hence the desire for another input source.

If you don't have MaxiDot already it is not feasible to fit it to the dash as an upgrade.

There is only an aux socket on the MY2007> cars, it's hidden in the jumbo box centre console, you have a pre 2007 car so unfortunately no AUX socket, you can have one but it involves an adaptor and the loss of the auto changer if you have one that is.

What spec is your Octavia?

When you say it's a little rougher are you referring to the engine or the fit/finish?

Welcome aboard by the way :)

Thanks. Yes, I saw the discussion about post-fitting the maxidot and it didn't sound a reasonable step forward. Maybe we'll upgrade to a new model one day but having bought the Passat new and experienced the depreciation I'm reluctant to do that again. The current one is an Elegance trim.

Yes, the engine seems rougher especially at higher speeds. The finish seems OK though some things a tad more flimsy. Still it was the finish that didn't last on the Passat - fabric door trims came unstuck in the hot summers, the glove box fastener broke and the gear leaver boot looked rubbish after only 3 years.

Next question: what engine? 2 litre 140 or 1.9 105?

Just a measly 1.9 - in fact the 2.0 estates seem rarer than hen's teeth around here. It goes well enough though I suppose.

The only tell tale between diesels is the red I on the TDI badge, no "2.0TDI" badges for us Skoda drivers I'm afraid.

Interesting. I thought I'd seen one. On VW's there was the plain TDI then the red 'I' and latterly the red 'DI' - maybe the whole darn thing is red now.

I think only B6 Passats got the 2.0PD engine? PD100/PD115/PD130/PD160 (the V6 version) were the available diesels in the B5.5 platform I believe.

The 1.9 is a bit rough by nature anyway really as it's quite an old engine, but the Passat is almost certainly better sound proofed hence why it's probably a bit noisier.

The 'normal' Mk2 Octavia trip computer is half the rectangular shape in between the speedo and tacho. It has black LCD on greenish background. Maxidot occupies the entire rectangular shape, and is illuminated white text on a black background.

HTH. :)

If we are talking about the "old shape" Passat B5.5 then yeah it's done with colour coded letters.

1.9 TDI's now just have "TDI" written on the boot. It's all changed on the latest crop of VW/Skoda cars.

I dont know if the PD170 in the Passat SEL/Sport has a red DI in the 2.0TDI badging.

I think the SEAT Leon PD170 has TDI badging but methinks VAG badging schemes are for another thread.

More confusion cometh:D

I think you can the the 2.0 8V BSS engine in the B5.5 Passat much the same as the Superb. But i think VW realised the DPF was such a pony idea on it they pulled it damn sharpish.

Too many abbreviations for me I'm afraid. I work in the NHS so my brain is totally full of them.
