Should I flush?

Featured Replies

I have recently purchased an Octy estate 1.9tdi on 90k. Its due a service soon and I was wondering what the general feelings were about engine oil flushing? Cheers

I've used them before and never had any problems but I have heard that sometimes engines can become a little more clattery if sludge has been holding it together :D

If you know that it's been serviced properly at the correct times then it's unlikely that it would be needed but if you are unaware of the historty then I would be inclined to use it.

I'd give it a flush at 100k or the next change, then not bother at the services after that if you are doing it yourself.

A flush every 100k won't do any harm, although you might want to do the next oil change on a slightly shorter interval as some amount of the solvent will probably find it's way into the new oil.

Done it on old cars and never had a problem, but i don't think it needs doing every one.

I asked oilman about the pros and cons of oil flushes a while ago. This was his reply:

I personally do not go for flushes, good quality modern oils have all the detergents needed to keep your engine clean.

Most flushes are made from paraffin or kerosene mixes and in reality can do more harm then good.

Ok cheers guys. I am still unsure whether to go for this. I know that the car has been regularly serviced (full main dealer history) so I guess that it cannot cause too much harm- can it?!!

To be honest, I wouldnt bother. Just do oil changes closer together. :)

Can see your point Denis, rather than additives, I used to drain the old oil then run a specific flushing oil in the car for 10 minutes on idle and then increasing revs to about 1500rpm.

Would then drain that , remove the oil filter and leave the car for an hour to make sure it was all out then run a tiny bit of oil in and straight out. It'd then plug it, put a new filter on and fill the car with good oil.

If you do do it it really is a once in a blue moon thing.
