Tyre Pressures on RS

Featured Replies

My fuel filler cap has pressures for tyres as 210KPA front and 220 KPA rear. What is KPA :?: I believe 210 KPA = 2.1 bar - can anybody pls confirm. Also phoned 2 Skoda dealers and one tyre co for advice - and guess what, got 3 different answers as follows;

30/28, 29/31 and 31/32 -all psi. Am currently running 31/32 - any views?

Cheers, Steve.

Kpa = Kilo Pascal = 1000 Newtons/square Meter!

(A Newton is 100 grams force)

210 = 30.45 p.s.i.

220 = 31.9 p.s.i.

I run mine at the stated pressures on the filler flap , 2.1 and 2.2 bar.

I found the RS a bit poor in the handling stakes when I first got it as I was I used to a very neutrally balanced car (BMW). I tried those stated pressures but felt it's less prone to understeer with 2.2 front, 2.3 reat. So far I haven't noticed any middle tread wear that would indicate overinflation on my Conits.

What do the track boys use?

Thanks for the replies guys. Still puzzled why my Jan 02 RS has the label in kpa and not bar as others have?

Steve

Mine has the same.Just assume its in bars and move the decimal point.

Bear in mind mine is a heavy bus, all the 4wd gubbins and being an estate an all......

...but the recommended pressures on the filler cap were 32.5 at the front and 34 at the rear.

The fronts *always* looked soft, and the car would naturally push out to understeer at the limit (ESP off), so I tried 33.5 at the front and found an improvement, slightly more "darty" in control. I then tried 34 (same as rear) and found it even better, much more neutral handling and now the tyre looks "round" too - done this for several thousand miles and no uneven tyre wear as yet.

With that in mind, you RS owners may want to try setting the front identical to the suggested rear figure?

I vary mine according to use. Run 1PSI higher allround than what it should be for every day use. Run the max recommended for track use. Also use nitrogen fill so pressures never vary, even with the increased heat of track use (please do not quote Boyles law at this point, remember that Nitrogen freezing point is well low :lol: and therefore by the time it gets up to above 0c it has very little expansion left)

I wouldn't dream of quoting Boyle's Law - it's Charles' Law that applies!

Also, there's no limit above which the pressure isn't proportional to the absolute temperature.

What's the reasoning behind using nitrogen (and where do you obtain it)? Bear in mind that air is 78 pecent nitrogen anyway.

I am taking up your suggestion and trying 34 all round. Not had much chance to try it out as I then went to meet Tavia to compare notes and a coil went. Please he was there to diagnose it the instant it went - ECL flashing....

checked my tyres the other day, woefully under-inflated. <slaps self>

generally keep to 32 all round. seems to have a nice balance and not too understeery imo.

Try 34 all round and let me know. It feels hard at the back for sure ( I carry full volume loads often) but I think bettter turn-in.

i'll maybe give it a go soon, but i think 32 all round is a good compromise for me.

Seems to vary by tyre type as well, just to make things complicated.

Must admit the nitrogen fill is such a placebo that I checked my tyre pressures when cold before going to a trackday. Then took them after the 154 mile drive to Donington. No change in pressure. Tried them after 15 laps of Donington GP circuit. NS front had gone up 1.5PSI, NS rear had gone up 1.0 PSI, both OS front had gone up 0.5PSI and OS rear remained the same as when cold. Got similar results at the Ring. Hadn't paid any extra for the nitrogen fill so it made no difference to me, but had to check. I now always use nitrogen fill, especially as it doesn't cost me anything. :D
