Wireless Networking

Featured Replies

Hi peeps,

I have a wireless network installed at home.

My main desktop is plugged into a 3Com ADSL wireless router/firewall and has been assigned an ip address.

I have wpa encryption, with MAC address filtering and no SSID transmit.

I already configured my PSP for wireless surfing, and will be getting my new laptop on Monday so will want to set it up so it can:

a)surf the web wirelessly - I know I need to enter the WPA encrypted key into the wireless settings on the laptop, and enter the laptop's MAC address into the list of approved devices on the router

b)share files with my desktop

It is the B part I am having issues with, I have my nephew's laptop at home just now to clean it up for him, and want to life some virus/spyware install programs from my desktop.

The laptop is connected to the wireless LAN and can see the web fine. It has been assigned an ip addres one greater than the hardwired (RJ45) desktop.

I have made the C drive on the desktop shared, but why can I not map a drive from the laptop to the desktop c drive?

And why can't i ping from machine to machine?

any help greatfully received.

Cheers,

Steven.

ok the ping thing was a windows firewall restriction.

I think the other could be down to workgroup assignation, but would still welcome any input.

OK, I can now see the laptop on my desktop's workgroup but when I click on it I get "xyz is not accessible, you might not have permission to use this network resource"

Anyone?

I'm a performance tester, networking is not really my strong area

Are the accounts the same on each machine.

If you set the admin password the same on each box does it let you in?

The desktop can see the lappy etc so the network side of it is all ok.

The account I use on the desktop has admin rights, but no password set.

I have created a duplicate account on the laptop but nae luck!

One thing is strange, although I can see both machines under the workgroup on the desktop, when I click on the corresponding workgroup level on the laptop, although it is a member of this workgroup, I get a similar message to above i.e. it doesn't show the lower level with the 2 machines so maybe something is still not quite right re network?

Try setting a password for the Guest account - same password on both machines.

Right-click My Computer and select Manage.

Expand Local Users and Groups - select Users.

Right-click Guest and select Set Password.

Go through the next two or three prompts and set an identical password on both machines.

Might be worth rebooting both machines after setting the Guest account password but i don't think that's necessary.

Martin.

You have enabled file and printer sharing in Windows Firewall too haven't you?
