Adviseable To Use Aircon Every now And Then ?

Featured Replies

Is it adviseable to use aircon every now and then ?

I ve seen issues with regassin of aircon and I never switch on air con

Should I leave it on every now and then to make sure it doesnt break all of a sudden?

Think the manual does state to run the aircon system every so often.

Page 98:

If the air conditioning system has not been switched on for a lengthy period, odours may be produced at the evaporator because of deposits. Switch the air conditioning system on at least once a month for approximately 5 minutes at the highest blower stage - also during the cold season of the year - in order to remove such odours. Also open a window for a short time.

But dont forget the Fabia doesnt have a magnetic clutch on the end of the compressor. So even if you dont have it switched on the compressor is turning and circulating the gas and oil (if there is any).

Eh? So it is running all the time off the engine?

I tend to have it on pretty much permanently unless I open sunroof or windows, hot or cold :)

Yes but its not always under full load.

On other cars where the air con pump has a magnetic clutch, the pump is not always turning and on those the pump uses the A/C gas as a lubricant hence its advised to be switched on frequently to lubricate it.

If the Fabia's pump is always going round then it'll just be as the book says, to stop it stinking when activated.

so the amount of power that the A/C compressor uses depends on the difference in temperature between the intake/ambient and the desiered one?

I would guess that is the case , the harder the aircon is being made to work , the more power it will be asking the engine for?

Never noticed a difference in performance or economy on either the Fabia or the Mondeo with or without the air con on, so I now just leave it on all the time. Why have something as useful as air con and never use it? :D

Umm.....you'd get chapped lips? :)

A/C makes the air really dry.....you'd look like a prune with it on all the time.....

what i don`t get , is , if water condenses on the A\C element - where dose it go when you switch it off and it thaws out - there is no drain holes\ pipes at the bottom of the ventilation unit - the water can`t escape and hence , loads of condensation on the windscreen - might drill a couple of holes in the base and attach a drain pipe myself and see what happens -

just an idea :)

It runs underneath the engine and onto the road making you panic thinking you have a leak........

lol yeah I've seen that. I use mine all the time in the summer, couldn't live without it now :)

I also use it on warm in the winter to clear my windows

That may explain why I look like a prune, but it doesn't seem to affect my passengers ;)

It does have a drain pipe that drains off under the car.

never seen any yet - have detailed diagram of unit and base cover dose not have any holes - i`ll have to sort this one out myself i think - overall fabia`s are quite well designed but on this one its :thumbdwn: , i`m sorry

The drain is at the back of the heater unit just to the right of the pollen filter slot, you can just about see it behind the carpet, it works very well providing its not blocked with wax.

This is what the bulkhead side of it looks like.

Well thats where Climate control takes over - before I had aircon I thought it a total waste and when I had air con I thought cliamte control was not needed now with climate control I'd never have anything less put the temp between 18-30 degrees turn it on and there you go whatever the temp outside its always the same inside & windows are always clear.

If you want to use climate like the old fashioned air con its simple you turn the fan from the climate to 1-4 and if you want it really cold you put it to * position.

Yup. Climate Control. Never look back.

Mine's on all the time except on those nice sunny days when I have the windows open. Nice blast of cold air and sunshine to wake me up this morning :D

On my mates old TT he had an 'Econ' option on his climate control. Does that use the A/C a little less than say on normal mode?

'Econ' mode turns the A/C compressor off completely - it will just mix normal hot and external cold air flows.

Ahhhh ok. That makes sense. Ta.
