Khumo ECSTA MX KU15

Featured Replies

Just got a set of these, in the dry they are fookin awesome 20 mph quicker round my favorite roundabout before my bottle goes. In the wet they are just as bad as my old Falken 452's grip wise but they don't aquaplane near as bad. When i say bad in the wet they loose grip when trying to accelerate out of a bend but if "coasted" seem barely acceptable. So i'm hoping for a dry few months, also a big plus MPG over the first 1000 miles is up 6mpg :)

Very happy in the dry, very worried in the wet.

Forgot to add these tyres are"summer" and can only get better as the temperature comes above the 8 deg C minimum rating.

I personally rate Kumhos, and will be having them when my Bridgestones wear out.

Although the Bridgestones are damn good in the wet tbh.

( anyone following my recommendations do so at their own risk )

Just ordered a set of kumhos (4 x 205/55/R16 91W) from tyresite for £220 all in. Looking forward to trying them out.

Just need to find a decent tyre fitter in or near York now.

Just phoned them... £12 a tyre, sounds ok.

The KU 15 are really a trackday tyre. Excellent if dry roads are about, but a nightmare in the wet as they wont disperse water or get up to a high enough temperature.

Also worth considering are Hankooks new Ventus RS2 if you want this sort of thing.

They are a lot better than my old FK452's in the wet, only let go if pushed, and they don't aquaplane at all, even in deep standing water. due to the double depth center section.

Have you done a few miles with them on Chris ?

Falkens seem to be really bad in the wet in general. Never met anyone that rated them for wet grip, although 452s are said to be very good in the dry. I could be tempted by the Falken 615s as a track tyre, but forget it if it is going to rain.

I never ran KU15s myself. Would have been tempted if they did them in 205/45 16W though. KU19 would be optimal for my car, but again, not in this size. I know a guy that runs KU15 on an old Astra GTE trackday car. His reckoning is they have just a little more wet grip in damp conditions as the ACB10s that he ran before. Better but still not really confidence inspiring in standing water. Only ever been out in his car on the ACB10s, but he reckons the Kumhos to be pretty much comparable to these in the dry, but much much quieter and smoother to drive on the road.

Trouble is that like any performance tyre geared for dry conditions, there are no sipes to allow the blocks to move about enough to get heat into them and to attend to drainage from the middle of tread blocks. Result is a tyre that loses progression when there is standing water, though often this sort of tyre works well in damp conditions. Nearest I ran to these would be Toyo 600F3. Very similar pattern and a soft compound.

That is one then! I tend to favour a more all rounder type performance for the Fabia. The MR2 is up for new tyres sometime this year and the Hankook RS2 is looking like it is worth a try. May just go for more Bridgestone RE040 though. They are not the last word in grip, but are properly stiff in the sidewall and very direct / communicative. Mind, in the wet, loads of grip then nothing at all, so need to be careful.

Fabia is getting T1Rs on Monday. Fancied something quiet.

Maybe it's the tread pattern, rubber compound, or even tyre size. Also like Khumo's. Only used the falkens as my mate has his own Tyre company and I got 4 215/40/17 Falken 512's, New valves and balanced for
