Does Pinky need a Tonic...............

Featured Replies

As we all know by my sig, Pinky has done over 142000 miles and I'm thinking of giving here a tonic like those you stick into the fuel tank , " Redex " for petrol Engines. Will this harm the high milage engine?? Are they anygood?? Do the Work?? Which one to use??, What about the ones you stick in with the Oil........Any advice please..:)

it's debateable wether it's worth bothering or not......

although those injection system cleaners are supposed to be the 'dogs danglies', it wont make any difference.... if your injection system was dirty then no matter how hard you tried, you'd never get rid of the muck!

They can do a fair bit of good.... when i first got mine i got some redex.

The car had been with an elderly man for thr previous 7 years of its life and was coughing and spluttering at mid revs while accelerating, so put some fuel in and gave it a double/triple dose of redex and then went for a thrash down the bypas... and tada! sorted!

Have also used it in my old Polo 1.0 which suddenly gained power from somewhere after use and my Citroen ZX 1.9D (diesel version of redex of course) which kicked a s*** load of black smoke out during the thrash and then hardly ever smoked after that!

Think with that many miles on the car it wouldn't hurt to stick some in, and it wont hurt it at all as my citroen had 150,000+ miles on the clock.

There's not a lot of info on a redex bottle about whats in it, but on the STP petrol treatment the game is given away bigtime. The main component in STP petrol treatment is Kerosene..so get some off Easy Jet and you are away:rofl: I have used it from time to time, but I've no idea if it does any good. I think ultrasonic cleaning of the injector(s) is more likely to do good things as it restores the spray pattern, but its not pennies to have it done.

I used to use Molyslip in gearboxes now and again, and that worked OK, but in modern units i'd be careful as it may not be compatible, and as for additives to engine oil. I think thats a no no as you are better off just changing the oil & filter. I'm not convinced about engine flushes either on older engines . All the crud settles and hardens quite nicely at the bottom of the sump, and all these flushes do is send it round the engine all over again.

For modern delicate engines an engine flush might be advisable just to keep narrow oilways clear, but i'm still not convinced having never had an oil related problem on an engine ever.

I think there is some merit in banging some redex in and then going out and doing 'An Italian tune-up' as long as you don't over rev it and blow it up in the process...seen it done you know..smoke from the redex..then nasty noises from a valve dropping and a lot more smoke:thumbdwn: . It was a friends mini 850 which we were trying to get to go as fast as..well anything really:D

I was planning on using a diesel additive to clean the juets Etc. on my recently aquired 1.9 cube van, but the handbook says "do not use fuel additives". So I didn't. But...

I was having problems with my old diesel Landy late last year, starting from cold being the main one, and bought the American additive (can't remember the name but it was the dearest on the shelf) for the fuel, and fresh oil and filters and oil addictive. I did the diesel, and flushed the engine, changed filters Etc. added the new oil (11 Ltrs!!!) and additive.

The result was amazing. An extra 8mph top end - which on a Landy is worth about 30mph extra - and much better starting, and I also gained a little on fuel consumption. Especially on diesels, the thick old sludgy oil is a major contributor to poor starting.

I've also used the jet cleaning additives on my Fiat Marea estate, and the results were actually noticable. Better power spread, and faster acceleration response, and a noticable improvement in fuel economy.

I was told that the first time you do it (unless it's been done on a regular basis in the past) the results are less than for the next times. Every 12,000 miles, I think I was told. And this seems to make sense...get rid of the coke and gunk before it sets like concrete.

I think I'll do the cube anyway.

I should say that after treating each of these two vehicles I didn't do the "rag it down the bypass" part. I just let the stuff get to work in its own sweet time.
