17608 Boost problem - what to do???

Featured Replies

Hi,

Basically, the car is running rough after a replacement coil pack. I'll list what happened and what I've done up to now to try to resolve this:

1) Last Saturday, my 100K+ (70k+ Jabba'd) Octavia vRS broke down. The AA diagnosed it as a coil pack (cylinder 4, under the black box/unit), which they replaced. I didn't drive the car again too much that day, but it seemed OK.

2) The same evening, I decided to clean/re-oil my Green Filter and the Maf.

3) The next time I drove the car, it began to shudder/jolt under hard acceleration, roughly around 3000-4000rpm. The idle/lower rev range is also noticeably rougher.

4) Not having Vag-com (yet), a local VW independant diagnosed a 17608 "Boost issue" (can't remember exact wording), which also sited the n249 valve.

So, cars poorly right now, not able to accelerate smoothly, I've done some DIY, which includes:

* Rebuilt/grease my Bailey DV30 dump valve (recirculating). Was dirty/not holding vacuum well before cleaning.

* Removed and cleaned the Throttle Body ("reset" with key/ignition/door trick).

* Bought a new MAF (thought I may had damaged old one). £70, No Luck!

* Checked pipes visible on top side of motor, no visible splits.

I've not been able to verify if the car still has the 17608, but I do know that the car is not running [well] like it was last friday, before the coil pack went.

Any ideas???

Thanks

Rich

P.S. I might switch to an OEM DV to see if mine has a problem lifting, next stop after will be to check pipes (TIP?) before changing N75/N249's etc.

I've now resolved this, followed several paths (including buying a new [unecessary] MAF, £70) but it turned out to be the Spark Plugs!!!

Change the standard NGK PFR6Q (platinums) for some NGK BKR7E's (copper). These won't last as long as platinum (approx 10k Miles compared with 75k+ for platinum) but they run colder (i.e. remove move heat from the cylinder, which is good for high boost trubo, supposedly(see 1.8t forums)). The BRK7E as cheap as chips though (as little as £2 each!), so they can be used cheaply to diagnose a problem. If you'd prefer some cold platinums which replace the standard plugs, look for NGK PFR7B (£8 each), which is probably what I do next time I change out the BKR7E's.

The BKR7E's appear to be cheaper at Mister (got mine from SparkPlugs, next day delivery  ).

Don't forget a little copper grease for the spark plug threads, a 10mm (16mm Hex) socket wrench and to tighten to finger-tight+1/4-to-1/2 turn if you're replacing the sparks by hand ;)

While I was at it (seeing as I was getting a 17608 and boost related issues) I rebuilt my Bailey dv30 dump valve, using LM (2) rated lithium-based grease. I'd like to thank Bailey for getting me a new BSP vacuum pipe so quickly (and at a cost that we all like) as I manage to break the old one :o

Cheers

Rich

P.S. As my issue came about just after a coil pack went, thought I'd let you know that there is a new revision, "R", part number 06B 905 115R. They're available here, £26.50 (always good to carry a spare  )

Thanks for the feedback and good to that your engine problems are now sorted. I have added that part number to the useful part numbers list here. :)
