Engine Management light has come on...

Featured Replies

The yellow warning light for the engine management came on yesterday while driving along for no apparent reason. However the next set of traffic lights when the car was in neutral it sat there juddering on idle but seemed fine while moving. Anyway today it seems fine even when stationary but the light is still on. My first thoughts were coil pack but it didn't seem severe enough for that and the fact all seems fine today. I take it the light wont go off now until the code has been cleared by a dealer? How much do dealerships currently charge to do this? Can I get it done anywhere else?

Anyone else experienced similar and what was the cause?

Oh and its a 2001 Octy vRS on about 57k.

It can be done with a code reader or with VAG-COM.

Thanks for the reply. I take it they aren't cheap to buy? I have been wondering if there was solutions I could buy and use on my own laptop. I work in IT and while that doesn't mean I know anything about ecu's i'd certainly like to be able to do my own diagnostics using a laptop instead of paying a dealership to stick a laptop on it and charge me for the privilege. Where can I get the hardware and software from? The last time I saw an AA bloke do it and find a coil pack issue it didn't seem like rocket science!

Thanks. OK probably a stupid question but are the cables on ebay known to have ever worked or are they just a waste of money?

I use ebay cable without any problems then just download vag-com free programme.

Works a treat.:)

Thanks. Who did you use? I need a cable that will connect to a mk1 vRS. Seen both USB and serial cables so which one is the best? Got the software so just need to get the cable now.

Thanks :) Bought that one so hope it doesn't take too long to come from Hong Kong in the post.

A common problem.

My light has come on a few times, Lucky for me my next door neighbour breaks Audi's. So went to his garage and he checks the codes.

I have had a warning for top cam adjuster twice on my car. Basically if you have been thrashing your car for a while sometimes this can come on. He has reset both times and not had a problem.

The other fault was a turbo pressure issue. He sorted out a loose pipe and reset.

All these problems very small and when reset I have had no issues. The car runs great.

Dread to think how much SKODA would have charged and what they would havbe said was wrong given half the chance. Don't trust dealers as far as i can throw em.
