Auto gearbox doesn't shift up

Featured Replies

Hi guys...

I'm driving an Octavia 1.8T on an auto gearbox.

Recently the car has "died" on me...

When moving off, it just goes on 1st gear and refuses to shift up...

I will then have to stop by the side and "reboot" the car (turn off the engine... wait a few minutes and then restart the engine again...)

It usually takes about 2-3 reboots before the car runs properly again.

Anyone has any ideas?

Hmm, sensor in the transmission. or the shift solenoid playing up.

Sensors in the gearbox? What do I tell the mechs? (as I don't think they would have a clue either as they're actually quite useless :thumbdwn: )

Problem is, if the skoda dealer blames the gearbox the dealer cant get spare parts so a replacement will be needed. However if you get the fault codes read, it maybe cheaper to get the box repaired by an auto transmission specialist. When my the auto gearbox started having shifting problems on my old mondeo, it was either a new/recon box at 1K or pay the specialist 250 to fix it.

First step is to get the codes read from the ecu.

Goodness... I just got the gearbox overhauled last year ... let's hope it's just the sensors? Are they any cables I should be looking out for as well?

Oh ... I got my own mech to run the VagTool on the car and it had no error codes ... sigh... no idea what's the problem :(

This might sound "off the wall", but are the various oil and water levels (engine and box) ok? I saw a similar fault on a Citroen C5, and the problem was traced (eventually) to a low engine coolant level.

Thought that was the case as well, but after topping up, problem came back again, so it's not the engine coolant :(

With the difference in cost between this and sensors/new box, try a gearbox oil change "just in case"? I realise that the oil in it should only be a year old.

dont forget to change the diff oil too!!!! the main gear oil and diff have seperate oils in them

The funny thing is that the car works fine after the reboot

  • 3 weeks later...

Got my problem fixed I guess... so far the problem hasn't returned.

What my mechanic did was to change the thermostat of the car.

Hopefully nothing goes wrong now...

But another problem has come about now.... sigh...

My maxi-dot display is blank now while the rest of the speedometer lights up ... :thumbdwn:
