Another vote for snow socks, they are brilliant. Reasonable compromise to winter tyres when you consider in the UK there are only a few days of the year when they are needed. Also most modern cars are crap in the snow because of the use of large low profiles tyres, so you need to have something to avoid an expensive slide.
