Power Steering

Featured Replies

The power steering on my 2002 vrs has suddenly become rather noisy. The slightest turn on the the wheel and it makes a noise like when you have the steering over on full lock (allthough not quite as bad)? Doesn't feel any different, just makes a racket.

Any ideas ?

So far in 7 months; new track rod, new cv joint, new driveshaft, new exhaust, new brakes, new tyres and buggered front and back wipers. Any more and its off to the great carsupermarket in the sky!

Check the level of the power steering fluid, maybe change it?

That's just a guess mind.

I presume thats the black thing with the steering wheel icon on it! No easy way to check it without opening it.

That's it, unscrew the green cap and there is a dipstick attached to it. The easiest way to open it is to place the handle of a spanner in the slot and turn it anti clockwise. If you do have to top it up only the proper green VW fluid will do part number G002000.

yup thats it, hardly any fluid left. I wonder where all that went :(

If you have local supplier Lucasoil Power st fluid will help with any slack and noise if damage has been done also prevents any leaks or the like in the future £10 or so

Put the VW stuff in, all sounds fine now...

hmm, looks like the leak has become a torrent now. Put some oil in and it’s gone within 10 minutes (oddly enough there is no sign of oil on the floor).

Car is basically undrivable and no garages are open :(

happy easter :)

Hmm if it not coming out anwhere it can only be leaking internally in the rack and filling up the boots.

I had this happen with an Audi 100CD5E some years ago. IIRC that had a single boot which could hold a remarkable amount of PAS fluid!

yeah thats what the RAC man reckoned. Anyways, I've got a hire car now (Nissan Primera, god its grim) courtesy of the RAC and they're towing the Octy to my garage on Thursday

Had to drive to Manchester airport to get the hirecar though and thats 45 miles from here.

Accoroding to the garage the steering rack has failed hence the leak, and they want £700 to replace it.

This can't be right on a 48k mile 2002 car can it ?

Steering rack failure?

Wasn't there a spate of these and something about extended warrenty or something or was that another car?

As a piece of advice I'd go and take out an extended warrenty on your car so you can at least budget for these things.

Warrenty Direct Gold looked good to me.

I have a warrenty from the dealer. Thing is the warrenty company reckon its not covered as its wear and tear. Wear and tear my ****!

I can get a refurbed rack for about £150. Might just do that, get it fitted and partex the bloody thing. Its by far the most unreliable car I've ever owned.

How much has it cost you for all those repairs?

Warranty Direct cover W&T (with you paying a part after 60k miles) after the first 3 months or IIRC from day 1 if you take it on from your warrenty.

I would personally be going down the not fit for purpose line myself if it isn't covered by warrenty as you have been sold what seems like a car with a huge number of faults for it's age.

If you do get yourself a rack and get it fitted don't forget you can use any VAT registered Indy garage to reduce labour costs.

So far not far shy of a grand, allthough I have been able to claim some of that back.

I can accept that things will go wrong, but just not that many.

NFP would probably involve court, and that something I'm really rather keen not to get into !

I've approached Skoda and the original garage for their take on things and if I get no joy with that I get on to trading standards.

Thing is I need a car at the end of the day :(

Well I got it back finally, complete with £703 bill :( tbf the steering is much better than it has ever been, much sharper turn in.

Thing is, it still makes a bloody grinding noise when turning left. I give up I really do :(
