Bigger wheels following remap?

Featured Replies

A mate of mine has a 1.9 Tdi 130 Bhp Passat.

He's had it re-mapped to 180 Bhp and now it wheel spins in second. He has 205/60/15 wheels at the moment. Would it make a huge difference to traction if he increased to 16s or 17s?

Thanks,

Jon.

No, but it would make a differance maybe using differant tyres. Whats he on now? I suspect Dunlops, as they are a favourite of VW, which last forever, but offer no traction when accelerating.

Yes, they are Dunlops. Any recommendations?

a bigger wheel will improve traction i'd say simply because tyres tend to be more square on 17's than 15's etc so a larger contact patch :)

i have eagle F1's on the front ofboth my cars, one has 225 17's on it and the other has 195 14's on it and the 14's are a lot more rounded than the 17's :)

but a better tyre will make a bigger difference than the wheel size :)

Toyo T1r, Bridgestone Potenza SO2, lots really. Just not Dunlops, or Continentals.

i have never had any issue's with my eagle F1's but have never had them on a FWD car.

Yep they are good too :). Sidewalls a bit soft when pushed, but astouding in the wet.

I may try them again on the 17" wheels, but the Eagle F1s really underwhelmed me on the front of the car. Fine on the rear, great in wet as already mentioned, but boy are the sidewalls too soft for the front. The conti's were vastly better in that sense (but worse in all others :P ) - the other thing with the F1s is that they really dont grip at all in cold weather conditions.

Now having 17" wheels I may find that the sidewalls are stiff enough as there is less sidewall to collapse relatively speaking :D

Toyo T1 r's would suit you sir

Yep :thumbup::D

I had Dunlops (std 205/55R16W) on front of mine, and changed to Toyo Proxes T1-Rs. I can't say that there's a gfreat difference to initial traction on take-off, but there's better lateral and wet grip (and so there should be, with 7mm tread rather than about 3mm).

I'd doubt that bigger wheels and same width but lower section tyres will make much odds, since the rolling radius should stay about constant.

Well, they kept 270 bhp under control for me, in all conditions :)
