Whining noise

Featured Replies

Hi Guys,

Just went out to move the car as it was blocking someone in and there was a high pitched whining noise. Can't really tell where it was coming from though, this was before putting the key in the ignition btw.

Moved car, turned engine off and removed key. still got the noise, which did then stop. Any ideas what this was ?

Thanks for any help.

Jane

Is your car alarmed and did the noise happen when you disarmed it?

No, no alarm.

So you just opened the car and the noise happened?

Just trying to get as much inof as possible.

that's basically it. Opened the door, thought what's that noise. Started engine and moved car, turned off engine - noise still there. It did stop after 5 or 6 seconds though. In all, probably making the noise (a steady high pitched whine) for about 15 -20 seconds.

Might well be nothing to worry about - just never heard it before.

have you left your lights on?

If it's still doing it when you leave work pop round so I can have a listen.

Can't promise to say what it is or how to fix it, though :D

was it the owner of the other car having a moan :D

are you sure it came from the car?

it might be something to do with the remote locking system if it did, say a lock jamming while trying to open, have a look next time you are out there to see if all the doors unlock (unless it's set to single door unlock then forget I ever spoke)

Rooboy - deffo the car - it is set to single door unlock. but thanks for the idea.

Stimps - will do

Ffelan - What can I say ? Helpful as ever. (runs outside to check that lights are off...)

Jane,

This may be a bum steer but it could be the fuel pump. On some cars (but I don't know if it applies to Skodas), the pump primes the fuel system as soon as the driver's door is opened.

Andrew,

yes, there is usually a sort of humming noise that is the fuel pump when the door is opened. Didn't hear that today though - looks like its decided to whine instead. Does this mean it's knackered ?

If the source of the whine is the pump (take up Stimps' offer to have a listen) then there may have some debris in it - a question for K I think.

Jane - pop round between 5:10 and 6:30 and i'll have a listen :)
