Service Intervals

Featured Replies

I am starting to get a little paranoid.

When I bought my vRS December 2002, I was told by the dealer it had variable sevice intervals and a light would come on to let me know when this was required. I have now done about 12.5k without a service light coming on.

Given my total lack of confidence in my dealer :thumbdwn: (see previous post below)

Can anyone quickly answer a question for me?

Over the last couple of weeks, on especially cold days, when we start the car the temperature light in the centre of the dash comes back on after a couple seconds and beeps and stays on. I asked a local dealer and they said to bring the car in. I asked the dealer who I bought the car from and they said it was just a warning light to say the temperature was lower than 4 deg

1. How can I tell it is on variable?

2. Is 12k + okay before a service?

3. Can I get it put to scheduled servicing?

All answers will be greatly appreciated.

Ps. Haven't fitted my ABD inlet pipe yet. Still waiting for some warmer weather and a spark of confidence.

Mine got to about 18.5k miles before needing a service. Think this is about par for the course. Don't recall a warning light though, IIRC it displays in the trip computer display how many miles to service - you need to keep an eye on it as it only displays for a short time before reverting to the clock etc.

HTH.

You will get a warning countdown from 1000 miles to zero when a service is required. This appears when you start the engine in place of the trip computer. This is usually aroung the 18-20k mark, or 2 years which ever occurs first. Mine 1st was at 19k and the second 34k.

I'm probably sounding dim.

You say it shows a count down on the trip computer? I don't recall seeing it. Is it obvious what the number is?

Maybe I should read the handbook

Not dim at all. I think it starts to show on the trip computer when there is 1000 miles to go before a service is required. It only shows when you first turn the engine on, stays for a few seconds and then the display goes back to showing the time or outside temperature etc. You can't access it by going through the various trip computer functions though, just need to look at the dash when starting the engine.

As a last resort, you could always read the manual ! (I haven't either)

Thanks for your invaluable help as always.

I can now concentrate on being paranoid about something else.

Check your coolant level. My car had similar symptoms (accompanied by a "Check Coolant!" warning on the multi-function display); I took it to the dealer expecting it to be a fault with the coolant level sensor. They just topped up the coolant - it was low, but above the minimum mark.

All I get when the external temp. drops to 4 degrees is a single chime, and a little "snowflake" next to the temperature on the MFD.
