Handprints

Featured Replies

At least one of my kids must have acid hands or something but they've managed to get handprints on the paintwork of our two current cars (incl Octy which is silver) and one of our previous cars. Don't think it was anything on their hands in terms of a contaminant as such but the paintwork is very heavily dulled in the shape of their hands, just where they brace themselves to open the doors.

Have tried just washing and also washing and polishing with Turtle Wax but to no avail. Anyone got any ideas on how to get rid of this?

You could try and "clay" the affected area and hopefully the clay will pull whatever has contaminated the paint out of the paint. Try Meguiars Quik Clay for starters or if you didn't wish to clay a suitable low abrasive paint cleaner.

Personally I'd try clay first then protect the area where you've clayed with your Turtle Wax.

Failing that I'd make your children wear gloves!

Or chop their hands off  Id try gloves first though

I'd reckon that with kiddies you are fighting a losing battle anyway. Can't you just get them to put their hands over all the paintwork to equalise it?

TBH I'm foxed. Is it that you had some layers of polish which have been washed away and you'd need to clean off a patch and "re-build" it?

Unfortunately not - both cars were due a wax...:o

Have got some Meguiars clay bar and detailing fluid - hope to give it a go tomorrow.

After you've clayed, don't forget to throw the turtle wax in the bin and get some decent protectant

Such as....???? (pref not too pricey or too much hard work)

I'd go for Meg's Gold Class, for ease of use and a good result. It's about £12 over here.

Plenty of options - Poorboys Natty paste wax circa £12, Chemical Guys XXX Hardcore Paste Wax roughly same price.

For durability Collinite 476 or 915 at £15.50 and £22.50 respectively. I use the 915 and it still beads after 4 months. Once applied use Megs Gold class shampoo or Chemical Guys citrus wash n gloss to keep it looking good. Also get some quick detailer to remove any hand smears easily.

Well I've started taking the bull by the horns. I went and got myself Meguiars wash mitt, water magnet, clay kit and Scratch X. Having seen around these parts that its necessary to wax immediately after claying, I decided to postpone the claying until I have a few more shekels for good wax (Meguiars Gold Class is

Just for clarification, I must post a new thread on the best method for washing, claying and waxing - 'cos the washing alone took 2.5 hours (and I was fairly tired after it too ).

I fear I may be starting to become a car polishing nerd....;)

Im with you on that one, Im out there almost everyday tinkering, and almost every other day washing it
