Pesky Engine Management Light

Featured Replies

Hi everyone,

I've had my Fabia Y reg since about November last year when it had about 54k on the clock. It's now on about 59 and today whilst driving to work, the Engine Management light came on and stayed on. When I got to work, I switched off the engine and then turned it back on again, but it was still there.

I've read a few posts on other sites that says this could be a major fault. A mechanic friend of mine says it could just be an oxygen sensor.

I've booked it in with my local garage tomorrow first thing (they gave it a major service not 2 weeks ago). Any advice before it goes in? I was hoping to take it away on holiday Friday morning....

Thanks,

Teej

I had exactly the same problem with mine on the way to work this morning!!!

I've got a 1.4 Y reg Fabia with about 63k mileage, and my engine management light came on this morning and will not disappear.

I'd like to know what the fault could be; don't fancy paying the garage hundreds to POSSIBLY figure the problem out. Phoned them and they think it could be a sensor setting me back

Mine is y reg fabia classic and yes this happened to mine but luckily it was under warranty. eventaully sorted with a thermostat replacement as the prolem was lying there, are there any other lights or things showing worng with the car, faulty heating flickering headlights and power streering loosing power, they are all interconnected, HOpe this is of some use

The light has come on because the engine computer (ECU) has detected a fault - it could well be the oxygen sensor but equally well any of the dozens of other sensors it monitors.

The most reliable (and so cheapest) way to diagnose the problem is for a garage to plug in their computer and read the fault code. The code will tell them exactly where the problem is and which (if any) sensor to replace.

£40 really isn't a lot for this. They'll probably read the code, clear all the faults then give the car a short run to see if the fault comes back and then advise what needs to be done.

Doesn't stop it being a pain in the *rse that something's wrong with your car :( - does save a lot of faffing about, breaking down on the motorway and properly expensive diagnostic work :)

Alternatively you could find another member who has VAG-COM software and is willing to take a look for you.

It does help if you want advice to tell us what engine you have in your car and maybe a few more detals in your profile may well lead to someone local helping you out.

ours did this, they changed the relay and it went away

Hi - actually as a matter of fact, people seem to be constantly flashing me at night when I have my lights on, like I have them on full beam. I moved the beam direction from point 0 to 1 and since then have had no one flash me.

Hi,

yeah sorry. I have a 1.4 8v classic Fabia. Mileage I've already mentioned. Let's hope the garage can sort it out for Friday's road trip!!!

I have a 1.4 8v classic Fabia.

If you update your profile with that information, when you ask a question the person trying to help can glance at the box to the left of the page and get more of an idea and hopefully help you out.

My 2001 'X' fabia 1.4 8v had the same fault, its to do with the air mas metering, if it gets too much air (i.e. above default) the light comes on (no loss of power). Check it in for diagnostic, and just reset to turn light off.

If the light comes on AND you lose power, then it something more serious
