Featured Replies

There is no nut but I know what you mean.

My brain hurts.

Did I mention I fitted the Sonys instead?:( :(

Kentish - hanging the speaker like that might work, but I don't know if I'd trust weighty speakers

hanging on the end of a barely screwed in screw ;)

Rich - how are the Sony's? Did you disconnect the rear tweeters at the same time?

Rob.

For my tastes the Sonys are fine. With a little rearward bias the sounds now 'fill' the car, much better than when I had standard fit in the back and Infinitys in the front. Obviously the Infinitys will be superior to the Sonys but I'm happy and all in all I've spent about

Much the same as my budget and much the same as my results :D

You don't need to physically remove the rear tweeters - if you only

use two of the four wires to fit the "big" unit it will silence the

corresponding tweeter. It does matter which two wires it is though! :)

Rob.

I can cope. Can't face another day hunched up in the boot. Swearing.

Hunched up?! I can fit in mine quite comfortably! Just paranoid about

some passing scally thinking it would be funny to shut me in it

Mind you, with a set of screwdrivers and a pointy screw, more fool anyone

who tried...

Anyway, boot-based self-defense is taking this a little O/T ;)

Rob.

Rob, for info were the original rear speakers paper cones or nylon?

Cheers

Mike

Not really sure - looked like some sort of waxed paper, not too dissimilar from the fronts.

I'll have a look to compare if I remember tonight :)

Rob.

Paper, same as the fronts.

blue positive or brown?

'blue positive or brown?'

On one side of the car the cables were a different colour to the other (no sign of a crash before you ask!) on mine....

Anyway, the ones that were brown I treated as positive. I followed the instructions (from Rich1068?) who said bind the 2 positives together into one etc and they work fine.

The wires are different on both sides of the car. When you unclip the wires from the VAG connector attached to each speaker look inside where they were fitted. You will see a + or a -. You'll then know which wires to bind.

I will have a look when daylight returns, although I did have a quick look but must of missed it if inside anything :D

As Rich says the colours are different on each side of the car but there is a method in their madness.

One side will have the normal brown positive and the other will positive wire will have a brown strip (can't remember the main colour; grey??).

Cheers.

Im still confused over which of the wires are positive. Actually the LH speakers have a red wire which I can only assume was positive and by luck I had wired the brown in the RH door as positive too. There is a way to check whether the speaker polarity is correct. It involves removing the wire on the positive terminal while power is on and the cone should relax by moving toward the magnet, if it moves away from the magnet at the moment of disconnecting then the polarity was worong and needs to be reversed. I will try this today as I fitted my new sony speakers as it approached darkness last night.

Incidently I had many visits to halfords and pound for pound the Sony were excellent quality.

Just a quickie, apparently one needs a 9v battery connected to the speaker terminals to do the polarity check I mentioned above.

patkin,

The VAG connecter has a male and female half. The female half is attached to the back of the stock speakers, the male half (secured with a clip) is connected to the end of the cables coming from inside the door. When you undo the clip and remove the male from the female look inside the female ( ) and you will see a + or a - , as the plug only fits one way...voila!

Just a quick one (as I cant be bothered to take the other halfs car appart, and it may be different in the vRS) will the 635's fit in the mounts on my Furby when I get it? just so I know.

Cheers

Just for the record, there are no markings on my front speaker . Can somebody therefore just state which wires are of which polarity for RH and LH wiring codes eg are the browns positive on the right and red positive on the left ??

Just finished installing my Infinty 652i's and at first I was confused as to what polarity the wires were. There are NO markings on the stock speakers so I performed a simple 9v battery test on the stock speakers:

When the cone pushes outward, whichever tab the positive of the battery is connected to is the positive speaker terminal.

Therefore armed with this info I could establish that:

Drivers side:

BLUE/WHITE = +

BROWN/WHITE = -

Passenger side:

RED = +

BROWN/RED = -

I think someone earlier in this post has connected their speakers assuming brown was positive - This means you are out of phase!!!

Hope this helps

Dave

BTW the Infinity's sound very nice!!!
