The Infinity 652i's are fantastic, and will open up a world of mid- and

low-ranges as previously unheard...

Not sure if it would be worth going better than this unless you're

planning on upgrading the head unit/adding an amp. You'd probably

be better investing the difference in upgrading all the speakers in the car,

rather than just having two fantastic speakers.

The existing speakers are 17cm (6.5") - the 6593i's are 6x9, so wouldn't

fit, although if you wanted to get into the world of custom mounts then

it could be done

Hope this is of help,

Rob.

thanks rob will go for the 652i. Think their

Yeah, that's where I got mine from - some of the audio links on here

have places selling them cheaper, but not so much so that it would make

me patient enough to wait while they were delivered...

You won't be disappointed with the 652i's...

Rob.

If you are interested I had a set of JBLs in a previous car - same size as Octavia standard fits - the sounds was excellent  - bass was sooo much deeeper and treble very clear. Cost was about

Re Infinity door speakers

Are these a perfect fit for the Octavia door mounted speaker? Any fitting hassles involved in fitting these (ie crossovers , soldering , disconnecting dash tweeters ect ect??) Plus , what about the rears and the dash/door tweets , are these upgradeable , or isnt it worth the bother?

Thanks

Duncan

The only hassle I found when fitting these was a lack of daylight and

patience, which is why I ended up having them professionally fitted.

I haven't as yet had a chance to open it up since to see what they've

actually done, but with regards to:

1. Soldering - this shouldn't need doing at all. There are adaptors

available to take the standard VAG speaker connection to simple

positive and negative terminals as used on the speaker.

2. Crossovers - not a problem, this is all handled by the speaker. So

if you leave all your other tweeters in, you get a fair bit of treble!

3. Dash tweeters - not sure about this as I haven't done it. I guess it's

just a question of gently prising off the covering and unplugging them.

As for upgrading the tweeters, it should be possible, and it's something

I'm thinking of along with upgrading the rear-mounted units too.

Have no idea about sizes though...

4. Physical fitment of door speakers - they're the same, so should just

screw into place.

Hope this helps,

Rob.

Chaps,

After reading this post I have just fitted the Infinity 652i's myself last night and they are really good, making a big difference to the overall sound quality. I now have the balance set to front weighted (by about 5 on the standard head unit) and it sounds terrific. The speakers are very efficient (92db) so the stock unit has no problem driving them. I to got them from Halfords, along with some spade connectors to hack the wiring, which was no problem and didn

As for the rear speakers unless you are going to cut holes in the parting shelf and fit decent size ones then it probably isn’t worth it.

My thinking with the rear speakers was that if they were naff paper cones

too, then they're probably distorting right in the ears of anyone in the

back. So replacing them with some equally sized but better quality

speakers would remedy this...?

Glad you're enjoying your Infinity's though! :speaker:

Rob.

Yep, you are probably right Rob, but altering the fade to 'front weighted' will reduce power to the rear and stop any rear distortion.

I know it

I suppose I could front-fade them, but that would just make it quieter

for rear-seat passengers, and then they might do something crazy

like trying to talk to me...

I never seem to have that much of a problem with water running

into the speakers...maybe it's because when I notice it trickling back

across the screen I instinctively slow down opening the boot.

Haven't had a chance to look at them yet, but when I do I shall be

right back on here to report my findings :D

My 'net based research has brought up this page:

http://www.simplycaraudio.com/html/speakers/customalpine6.html

which seems to indicate they'd be 13cm units. The hunt continues...

Hey Mike, does this involve taking the door trim off? or do the speakers fit from the front?

The speakers fit in from the front, you just need to pop the grille off

with a screwdriver, and it's held in with four screws.

(Rob - thanks for you last post about the engine - did you see my reply?)

I think that might be the one I've just replied to :D

Rob.

Paul,

No need to take the door trim off. Just pull the speaker cover off, undo the four retaining screws and hey presto, its a straight swap.

Rob, thanks and keep us posted with your findings.

Mike.

Took her into my local ICE specialist (has done my last 4 cars). He reckoned the Head Unit wasn't that bad and should be left alone, solution is new Pioneer (my choice, he said Infinity were just as good so well done those of you who have got them!) speakers, straight swap replacements for the fronts and big parcel shelf jobs to replace the rears (due to lack of space in orginal fittings).

The thought of Parcel shelf speakers had me cringing 'til he explained that they re-trim the shelf with acoustic cloth so from the top you can't even tell they are there Also with mounting them under the parcel shelf they don't get soaked every time you open the hatch

Seeing as the speakers will be able to handle way more than the HU can put out he suggested a 'small' amp as there is plenty of room behind the dash for it to sit well out of the way, all removable for if it ever gets sold.

Anyone who has fitted the infinity's, i've had a look at the wire connections and they are different, excuse my ignorance but what connectors do i need?

  • Author

Please disregard my last post i have now managed to fit the infinity's. And they are a big improvement on the standard speakers. The process is fairly simple. The confusing bit is that the standard speakers have 4 wires going in to them. Two of these wires apparently do nothing? The conectors need to be changed from a clip to a spade connector.

I always thought that 2 of the wires were for the tweeters:rolleyes:

However seeing as you've fitted 2-way speakers...no problem.

Still waiting for my new HU to be deliverted; already got me Bluespot cable.

Will probably get myself some of the Infinity's next month.

Cheers.

Adrian.

are u saying that i need to merge the two wires?

just i conected 1 set of wires and nothing, the next set and hey presto.

If my assumption is correct then as you've replaced the main front speaker with a 2-way you need not worry. Remember though that nothing will be heard from the tweeters by the side mirrors though.

Sorry if I created any confusion.

Although I'm no audiophile this has me thining now..........you get better sound from replacing the speaker but it's all being outputted into the footwell.

Was going to get the Infinity myself but may be i'll look into getting a componet set-up i.e. match tweeter and mid-range with a passive cross-over. Would probably give a better output spread.

Something to think about anyway.

Cheers.

Adrian.

But if two of the wires were for the tweeters, in the mirrors,

how do they connect to it if they just go into the door speaker?

Admittedly I can't think of a good reason why there would be

four wires into the speaker unless it was biwiring, but judging

by the quality of the OEM speaker - why would they

bother?

My wing mirror tweeters still produce sound, though I'm not

sure quite how my Infinitys are wired - still haven't got

round to looking.

As for the sound all coming out of the footwell - the Infinitys

have a directional tweeter, so you can angle them upwards

to the "sweet spot", so you probably wouldn't notice...

Rob.

Rob,

good point about the directional tweeter.....forgot about that.

As the the 4 wires I always assumed one pair was for the tweeters. Doesn't seem to make a difference if this second pair is connected or not or even which pair (?). I'm not going to search and see where they go though.:D

Cheers.

Adrian.

From what I can recall, the adaptor which takes the four-pronged

VAG plug to the two spade connectors simply loops one wire

from each polarity into the other connector of the same polarity.

I'm sure that's worded very badly, but if you mooch into

Halfords and have a look at the fitting kits, you should see

one for the Golf and Passat which has the connector in it.

I would post a picture but I'd feel cheeky going in with a digital

camera :D

Still not sure on getting the rear side-shelf speakers upgraded -

the Infinity 452 should be the right size, but are comparable in

price to the 552!

So I'll probably either be looking at cheaper ones, or going the

whole hog and getting parcel shelf ones fitted...

Rob.

I doubt if I'll upgrade the rear ones.

If I was an audiophile I'd probably have a component set-up in the front and a sub in the back. As it is I'll upgrade the front to the Infinitys and just bias to the front.

I kind of feel that my "music" should be coming from infront of me. Just been reading a thread on the MKIV site which seems to support my thoughts.

They all had component set-up in the front, a sub in the back with either standard rear speakers or just upgraded "standard" size . All seemed to advise against putting in bigger rear sepakers as they would unbalance the sound stage, "Man".;)

Too much for me...as long as it sounds good to me that'll do fine.

We seem to be a bit thin on the ground as far as ICE advice. I know Karl is "da ICE Man" of Briskoda; anybody else ICE conversant?

Cheers.

Adrian.

p.s sorry if I've lumbered/labelled you Karl.;)

The four wires are simply to connect both the main speakers and tweeters in a parallel configuration, with the tweeters having their own crossovers already attached so they don't go bang.
