Cam Belt Change on Octy 2.0 MPi

Featured Replies

Hi All

I've just bought a 2001 2.0 Elegance with 57k on the clock and a full service history. According to Skoda and others on this forum, there is no recommended interval for changing the cam belt on this engine. I think the engine code for this car is AQY.

My local Skoda dealer recomended changing it at 120k!

I had an A6 petrol with the ABK engine, and I was nervous leaving this until the recommended 80k interval, although nothing bad happened.

There must be some logic to such a long interval - is it possible that this particular engine is one of the rare designs that does not fail catastrophically if the cam belt fails?

Can anyone confirm this or recommend a suitable interval?

Thanks

Guy

60,000 miles or 4 years and seriously consider changing the water pump at the same time. I have seen water pumps seize solid and strip the teeth from the belt and this is an interference engine where the valves will hit the pistons.

Skoda have changed the interval to 60K or 4 years because of belt failures. If you can check your cars history as it should have had a change in 2005, meaning its now not due until 2009. If you find no evidence of a change then get it changed asap, and as already mentioned change the water pump at the same time.
