Windscreen chips?

Featured Replies

Having now been driving my furby for nearly 6 months, I'm horrified at the number of chips in the front windscreen. None of them have caused any round distorting cavities, but they are noticeable none the less - one of which is right in the driving line :(

I don't want to sound daft going to my dealer enquiring whether this could be a warranty issue - but the fact is I've never been in a car with sooooooo many chips in little miles and time on glass which should be resistant. I've driven about 50,000 miles in my old Polo, in the same places, and only ever had a chip once.

Could it be a defect or should I live with it and decide whether I want to fork out for a new windscreen?

I got a nasty one after only a couple of weeks of having mine which has been repaired by Autoglass but it still noticeable (and right in the driving line). However I didn't want to pay 50 quid excess to get a new windscreen, and wasn't convinced that they'd put in the correct one as they didn't expect the windscreen of a Fabia to be the one I had (Is the vRS windscreen different at all to others - wouldn't have thought so?).

I'll see if I get any more - only got 1 chip in 3 years on my 306, so maybe I was just lucky.

Xavier,

warranty job ain't going to happen for chips but if you get a crack and there's no sign of impact you MIGHT get lucky.

Tried Jacksons to change mine cracked screen on warranty........"Ah that's very difficult to prove Sir....doubt if you could it on warranty."

My screen also has lots of really tiny chips, but they only became apparent when I scrubbed the screen squeaky clean to apply the ombrello. I kep scratching the chips with my nail thinking "why won't that come off?" :D

But, as they're not noticeable when I drive (normally) I'm not too worried about them.

Most insurance companies allow you to get chips repaired for free, so I would get Autoglass or AutoWindscreens to come out and have a look at them. At the very least, if you get them repaired they may not get any more serious.

My screen's not too bad (there are some small chips), but my headlamp lenses are covered in loads of little chips and marks.

Mrs Fen has been really unlucky - we replaced the screen in her Mondeo last year due to a crack and when I was cleaning it the other day I noticed another sizeable chip near the edge of the screen has started yet another crack. Thankfully it's nowhere near the line of vision so we'll just keep an eye on it.

True, we've done a few where there has been no impact point.

I would say that as your furby vRS is equipped with a high performace diesel engine and is maybe driven in a manner where "BANNED FOR LIFE" :banned: has the slight possibility of being stamped on your driving license, this increased speed has led to the high impact power of stones. That may explain why you windscreen has so many chips in it.

Just a theory
