I have an Octavia estate, 1993, the tailgate seems to be jammed shut and will not open.

I've taken the trim off from the inside and the unlock mechanism seems to be working. When you operate the door catch you can see the bar pushing down to the catch at the bottom but this seems to be jammed.

There are 3 large nuts holding the catch to the bottom of the tailgate but I'm not sure whether I should disturb them.

Any idea how I can solve this?

I'm not sure how this can happen, but suspect the actual catch must have siezed.
