Power Steering Fluid - ARGGHH !

Featured Replies

So,

Was sitting in traffic and heard a weird hummm coming from under the bonnet, it got worse when turning the wheel ! So thought straight away, check the fluid level on the power steering.

Sure enough it was well bellow the min mark, had to try three garages before i could get some castrol transmission fluid, same stuff for the power steering apparently.

So topped it up, noise went away, checked an hour later still ok and then the next day it was completely gone again ! .. I'm assuming a leak. Theres none on the ground that i can see, so i'm wondering where its going and how hard is it to fix this leak ?

Any thoughts or previous experience on the same issue would be great ! I did read a previous post where a guy found it was leaking into the brake shoe i think.

Also, how much damage if any have i done to the power steering ? It seems ok at the moment.

The fluid could be filling the rubber boots that seal the rack.

Any place else to check it could be leaking from perhaps ?

Rang a mechanic today, said they can't look at it till thursday :( Went to another one but he seemed to be a total cowboy, said he could take it straight away but got really ignorant when i tried to explain what was wrong with it.

So i think i'll take it to the guy who i've used before .. seems trustworthy and a few lads in work use him too.

You might not see it on the ground as there is a guard under the cars engine, however if it isn't leaking onto this then there have been a couple of cases of the rack failing recently.

If you suspect that then take it to an indy garage as the rack is very expensive to replace at a dealers.

I'll second that, mine cost
