Are my shocks gone ?

Featured Replies

Hi guys, haven't posted much on here lately as I've been busy decorating, entertaining the kids and mountain biking. I have been having the occasional look at a few topics and PinkSkud I was sorry to hear about your theft. Basstids!!!!

Anyway, back to my question. Basically my road is not very smooth and when I drive up it I get a lot of donking. But when I get to the top of the road and turn onto the smooth dual carriageway it is fine.

It sounds to me like the shocks have gone and the spring is causing the shock to bang at the end of it's travel as it has no resistance against the spring . . . but I may be wrong. What do you reckon?

Also if I do change the shocks is there anything else that usually needs replacing around that component?

Cheers,

does the car bounce when you push down on the suspect shock?? or does it just settle back to it's normal place without wobbling??

i would also change the top mounts when changing the suspension:)

It seems to settle back down OK. It doesn't carry on bouncing for 10mins like an old Cadillac.

bouncing is the normal sign that they ae worn, is it weeping any fluid from the shock??

As far as I know they're not leaking. I checked the brakes when I first bought it a couple of months ago and I don't remember any damp patches. I might have another check this weekend just to be safe.

no, you wont see damp patches, it will just be a little bit of the fluid leaked out onto the shock normally

Think I'm gonna bite the bullet as I want to keep her for a while. I'm going to get the new shocks and top mounts and probably the lower wishbones with new balljoints. Shouldn't break the bank. Then the timing chain and the . . . . . . . .

hi. nice to hear you still find the time to ride. got me a new bike now, a santa cruz bullit.

as for your shocks. when you push on the front wing, the shock should compress, and then rise to ride hight and then stop. with no more movment.

the original shocks are serviceable, so you could open then up and have a look.

Yeah, I love freeriding with the odd dirt jump thrown in. Just building a dirt ramp in the garden at the moment. Gets a bit silly at BBQ's though. A few beers and you become invincible . . . until you crash that is.

The bullit . . . ? Very nice. Did you go secondhand or get the new beast?

As for the shocks, for what they cost I think I'll just replace them. NiCE.

how about some of theas? HP sporting - Ing. Ota Husek

as for the bullit, its a 2003 7" one, with 2004 boxxers on and a 5th eliment shock. NICE.

anyhoo. i ride better when pi$$ed. mor relaxed.

Had a quick look at the car tonight (didn't jack it up or anything) and my neighbour also reckons the shocks settle nicely.

So I grabbed the top of each and shock them and there is definitely and small sort of donking. Do you think it could be the top mounts?

I've decided Saturday to give the front end a proper going over and a spanner check.

sounds like the next step to me.

Just looking at the car now and after taking the strut brace off and covers the gold cup on top of the rubber top mounts seems to move a fair bit. It moves up and down and left and right by about 5mm or so. Is this excessive? This could explain the metallic banging noise I get.

Fitted new top mounts and the car feels a lot better. The original rubber had just collapsed. NiCE.

good skils that men. fancy coming round and doing mine?

I'm not sure yet. Let you know when I recover. I feel like I've been run over.

My home mechanic days are taking their toll these days. I remember when I used to work on my car all weekend and feel fine. Nowadays it takes me the rest of the week to recover.

I'll fix your mountain bike though. That's nice and easy :D
