HELP - Octavia vRS EPC/ASR light

Featured Replies

Hi All, am new to forum and wonder if you guys can help.

Bought a 54 plate vRS estate yesterday (private sale), but am having some problems already!!!

Two scenarios:

1. Engage cruise control at e.g. 70. Dis-engage by braking, down to say 50, then activate again. Speed gets to about 65 then EPC light and ASR lights come on. Engine looses power, hard shoulder job. Rough idle, when I try and rev won't do anything. Switch off then back on again, cleared. This only happens when I activate cruise back to the programmed speed.

2. Driving in 5th at approx 4000RPM (on a private road of course), for about 10 minutes, same problem EPC/ASR lights, loss of power. Restart engine cleared. If I stay under 4000 no problem. Happened a few times. Just before it happens, I feel a slight hesitation in power - I have learned if I let off the throttle for 10 seconds, then re-apply, all is well. However if I feel the hesitation and keep throttle at same position, engine dies again.

I test drove a 53 plate at a Skoda garage last week, and it didn't feel anywhere near as quick as this one. Also, when you accelerate you get like a wooshing sound then a snapping noise when you change gear, is that a dump valve? (Sorry if I sound daft, don't really know too much about turbos) I certainly didn't hear it on the one from the garage.

So, I went to my local garage, who plugged in a snap on tool (ODB?) and the fault code mentioned a Torque Monitor. They weren't to sure what this was and cleared it.

Have read a few posts on here about that fault, but am not really sure what's up?

Can anyone help please

Do a search on the string 'torque monitor' and you'll see there is a mod with a similar issue.

Is the car remapped? As it seems more powerful it sounds like it might be. The sound you mention probably is a dump valve.

There was a similar story a while ago, I think that was looking like a remap without updating torque limits, so the ECU was deciding it was over-boosting, or something (can you tell I know a lot about these cars? :) ). The poster was saying similar things about cruise control.

Thanks for the replies. I will check out the torque monitor thread when I've got 5, gotta go out soon.

The guy I bought it off says it has never been remapped or modified (he has been the only owner), but I am not so sure. Once the turbo kicks in it feels like the tyres are leaving the ground and it is very difficult to steer even in a straight line. My worry is about the warranty, it is until Feb '08, but if the car has been tinkered with will they detect this and void my warranty?

Is there any way of telling if it's been remapped or altered in anyway?

Cheers

Just a quick update: I have the car booked in with Skoda on Sat 12/05 for them to check it out. They say they will run a full diagnostic on it, but they have never heard of the Torque code, great.

I guess I'll find out if it has been modified when the plug their kit in, would it be obvious to them?

I'm guessing a bit here, but could the wastegate be stuck closed, leaving the car over-boosting?

Is it easy to tell/check if that is the case?

Dealer should pick it up on the 12th if I'm right.

It won't be immediately obvious when they plug the VAS tool in but if it is more powerful than standard they'll notice it on test drive and should they be bothered they could measure and check boost values which would have been increased if it were mapped.

So I guess we'll see what happens on the 12th then. If they find it to be remapped, can they change it back, or alter it themselves? Would like to know where I stand before I go there...

They ought to be able to reflash it to Skoda software.
