TDi Turbo Probs

Featured Replies

Got my car back from the garage last week after modifying the front bumper with a Peugeot 106 at a roundabout. Next day while accelerating up a slip road all the power suddenly went and I realised the turbo was doing bugger all. Got home had a look under the bonnet and couldn't see anything wrong, tried the car again and no problems. Since then it has happened a number of times and is cured by restarting the engine.

At first I thought that the garage who had done the bodywork had messed something up, so I took it back. They had a look and hooked it up to the computer and got three different error codes, which matched with the problem occuring three times. They said they had spoken to someone at VW and were told that this was a known problem with these engines. They cleared the faults and said that may sort it out, of course the problem reoccured about 500 yards done the road.

The car is booked in at a skoda dealer tomorrow but I just wanted peoples opinion on what could be the cause of the problem, just a coincidence it happened after the accident repair. The car was fine for over a week after the accident before it went to the garage.

I have read a few threads about turbo problems on the forum and it does seem very similar to these. The car is an 03 plate and has only done 40k miles.

Trundlenut.

Surely if the turbo worked before the accident and doesn't after then that is part of the insurance claim.

After all the shock of the impact may have caused damage to the turbo.

It isn't unheard of, but an impact can cause these problems and you pay your insurance for a reason. Just seems a bit co-incidental that it is all ok then not ok after the shunt.

Is the correct grille on the drivers side of the bumper? If it was replaced with the wrong one without any holes in it then the intercooler can't do its job. Was the intercooler damaged?

Otherwise it may be a case of a sticking VNT mechanism.

Agreed with both previous posters (although surely all intercooled Octys have the same RHSMIC system?). Helping with diagnosis in cases like this is just one reason for stating which version you have in your personal details!

Just a quick update.

Personally, I would call the insurance and state that the turbo worked before and doesn't after the repair without saying anything else and see what they say.

They may arrange for the repair centre to replace it as it will be easier and cheaper for the insurance and they want to keep you happy. The worse they can say is no.

Also you can get it done a lot cheaper elsewhere and turbo specialists can clean the things up or offer recon units for at most half that price.

It may be a control valve but Skoda dealers don't repair things they just replace them.

The dealer I took the car to said they didn't know what was wrong with the turbo and it didn't matter they just fit a new one.

Didn't get anywhere on the phone to the original dealer, so I have written a nice letter mentioning the Sale of Goods Act and things not being of satisfactory quality. Now have to wait and see what happens.

Hmm - sounds like you have same problem i had

had my turbo replaced under warranty - it then failed again (11months after warranty ran out)

skoda cs stumped up 100%parts and 50% labour costs tho

otherwise it would have been the

Seriously play dumb with your insurance company and see what they say.

Most of them will just assume the damage is a result of the accident. They don't pay any where near as much as you do for parts and labour etc.

At page 4, use "PlusGas", rather than whatever it was as a dismantling lubricant.
