Painting engine blocks??

Featured Replies

has anybody got any advice regarding repainting tired looking engine blocks??

obviously i need high temp paint, but do i need primer?? should i get the block shot blasted first??

just clean the block as best you can , steam clean if you can , spray bottle with thinners in if you can't , blow dry , then brush or spray your chosen paint

a friend had some paint specially made up to paint the blocks of old minis green , cost a fortune and is very nasty stuff

If you have the engine to bits I sent my block off to be 'dipped and stripped' before having it powder coated, the powder coating was in the region of

yeah, the engine will be totally stripped down. i'm going to have the bores honed and the deck surface ground at a mchine shop...

i didn't think of powder coating;) how do you stop the excess 'overspray' getting in the bores/etc

Tom, just paint it with a brush. you will not see that much of it when fitted :)

i was rapidly coming to that conclusion myself...

what do i do tho?? just repaint over the existing paint(after degreasing of course)

or get it blasted, then prime, then paint??

i've never painted an engine block before so i'm not sure what will happen when it gets hot

Yes, just degrease and paint. Will smell a bit when it gets hot :)

I have done plenty and had no problems

have you got any recommendations of which paint to use?

Tom, just buy some engine paint from Halfords :)

Or BBQ paint - people use it on bike exhausts so should be up to the job.

there's a place in oxford shire that will blast and powder coat wheels for

One of my mates used to rebuild marine engines as part of his job. They normally degreased, and then painted the re-assembled engine with Hammerite or Smoothrite (depending on boat owner's preference for finish and colour).

the cylinder head/bores/distributor hole were all masked up, and i put it in to get coated with the sump and gasket in place, when its finished just split the sump and block and get a new gasket.

Easy peasy and looks great with a long lasting and tough finish

i'm starting to really like the whole powder coated idea now!!

but before i spend out on that, i'm going to strip everything out (crank/rods/pistons/pumps/valves/kitchen sink/etc) then pressure test it... there's no point wasting money on a block that is cracked.... and as this block is from an unknown car and it will definately see some abuse in the future i think it's worth doing it, even if i have to pay to get it done instead of doing it myself

Saw a car at the Ace Cafe with it's block painted. Must have been some time ago, but now it's peeling..., so it looks a bit cack ...

i took the liberty of browsing through the vairous paints are halfrauds today.. on thier high temperature paints (manifolds/engines/etc) it says to get the surface grit blasted back to the bare metal before de-greasing and applying the paint...

Exhaust paint is a different animal, and needs to deal with way higher temperatures than engine paint does.
