Coolant leak caused by PD160 air intake

Driving home things got a little hot under the bonnet.

On inspection I found a coolant leak coming from a small hose which is part of the coolant return. I have had a PD 160 air intake fitted to my VRS for around 25K miles and due to engine movement and vibration the larger air intake pipe has been rubbing against this hose and eventually worn through.

See pic for hose and postion.

Please everyone who has the PD 160 intake fitted check your cars to see that yours is not doing the same.

I have fitted a new hose and there has been no harm done. This can easily be avoided by 2 possible methods.

1: simply wrap the hose in insulating tape to act as a buffer.

2: loosen the 2 retaining spring clips and twist the hose round to give sutable clearance.

I have done both to mine now.:thumbup:

Yep. Mine started chaffing 50 miles later. Thankfully i spotted it it and did the above. Good advice. Nice to see the DIY guide updated.

People might not realise that the engine moving when under load would cause the pipe to rub against the intake pipe.

Common sense should prevail.

I fitted a piece of garden hose with cable ties over the pipe to prevent damage straight after the upgrade. There are threads on here somewhere detailing it, some people just manipulate the pipe with cable ties to prevent chaffing.

I just made a easy mistake. I posted the thread to alert others people to remember and check. Just tring to help other to avoid a bit of hassel.

yep - really good thing you've pointed it out to emphasize this to everyone :thumbup: - the chafing problem was only mentioned "in the small print" on a Brisk search- nice wide tie-wrap as above on mine since the install - essential part of the mod IMHO.

Tie-wrap locking ties are the quickest, easiest and most secure - takes all of 2 minutes to prevent a potentially costly problem...

You really shouldn't take it like that, your post was informative, concise and it has good value to forum.

Well, this is a new bit of information to me, so I applaud the thread starter! :thumbup: Although as mine is not attached to the slam panel, it's moves about a bit more and I've never had the chafing issue.

No offence meant sir, just thought it was covered as part of the how to guide. Casting ones mind back, I don't remember reference to it, however, when moving stuff about under the bonnet, one should always be aware of potential clearance problems, not only when modding either.

TBH there are so many threads that missing one is very easy.

To write, "....do a search" or " ..its obvious" does not help and is downright rude.

Just to let everyone know and how easy it it for people to be confused by doing a search on here due to so many postings.

this is the information i followed , and on offence ment to the help that VRStu gives people and I read and was aware of his disclamers.
