Perhaps a perished bush allowing play...?

When the car was jacked up I gave all the components a good shake. But could not find any play anywhere.

The only play I could find was the drive shaft it would move about 1 mm in and out of the gearbox. I am under the impression this is quite normal.

could be drive shaft of track rod end, I've got similar sounds on drievers side but yet to diagnose, skoda reckons brakes but I'm not so sure. You'll probably need to apply force to parts using a lever to discover any meaningfull play...

It might only manifest itsself when cornering & under load.

If a bush is 'broken' when the wheels are straight ahead, it will be aligned properly and look/feel fine.

I would get it checked professionally, if only for peace of mind.

maybe a dry wheel bearing?

hi there im a mechanic myself and my mate works for skoda and i have an occasional noise frm my octy vrs drivers front couldn,t find nothing wrong,asked him and he said they fit loads of front wheel bearings to octys,i found it strange cause my noise is intermittent,usually when a wheel bearing goes the noise is there all the time,wheel bearing is only

Had that problem a few weeks age now fixed with a couple of jubly clips.
