Black Smoke, rattle and loss of power

Featured Replies

from my point of view, if you've been checking the oil often, and there were no warning lights, it CANNOT be blamed on you... it is a mechanical faliur that should be covered under warrenty......

Except for the modified exhaust, which I wonder if SUK are using as a reason not to honour the warranty? I guess time will tell :)

SUK customer services have just got back to me and said that the retailer has told them that it's not a manufacturing defect therefore they are not going to assist in my case. They've given me no extra information about why this conclusion has been made, just that's it and they have to take the dealers word for it. I'll be taking it elsewhere for a second opinion now which CS said they are happy for me to do and they will look at it again if another diagnosis is given. I'm also going to be taking to an independant garage as well as I have no confidence in Pilling itself as this isn't the first time they've put problems down as not a manufacturing defect. I'm so pee'd off right now, what else can I do apart from obviously cough up?

Thanks again for any help.

give trading standards a ring... explain to them, and see what they say....

Get a 2nd opinion. Maybe Skoda CS would suggest one. Also, if APS have been servicing the car, get their opinion on it.

If the dealer's statement is "no oil means it was neglected", as has been stated previously, that's bolox!

Unfortunately, unless you can keep Skoda CS on-side, I think you're going to have to get an engineer's report as to why it failed. At which point, you have to start doing the sums as to whether it's worth it.

Well I've spoken to the dealer again and asked what he actually told Skoda CS and he said he told them what he could see, which was: there was no oil on the dipstick and the car had been lowered, different air intake and a different exhaust and then went on to say to me that he can't see these modifications having any effect on the turbo for it to blow, but technical said they're refusing. He also gave me the price for the work to be done which totals up to

Don't forget if you go for a hybrid you'll also have to budget for remapping too! :D

I know I'm dreading the total cost. Has anyone used Turbo Solutions before as they've given me quite good prices on a replacement (

Have a look on Allard's site too for turbos and maybe other shiny bits :D

In some ways you may have been lucky. It's not unknown for the engine to eat itself whilst running away on the engine oil.

I think Skoda's position is unhelpful but kind-of understandable at this stage. Basically, you'll have to prove to them that the turbo failure wasn't caused by your mods. At which point they'll probably pay up. Getting to that stage would probably eat up too much time and money to pursue it and you migh not be able to prove it anyway.

Good luck with sourcing the bits for the hybrid and other upgrades.

Problem is most dealers will put up or 'allow' modifications if you have a good relationship with them. If you go in there with a heavy handed attitude arguing with them then they will take the defensive and then just say sod it. They don't have to by any means, part defect or not if you have invalidated their terms and conditions then that is that I think.

Personally i'd say every 5k is far to long to be checking your oil level, IIRC the owners handbook recomends weekly. Also the Fabia isnt fitted with the low level warning for the oil as it doesnt run on variable servicing. It does have an oil pressure light but this will only come on when its too late and the damage is usually done. If the turbo has ingested the oil there would be a lot of deposits in the exhaust or the intake system as mentioned. It would have also smoked a lot before the issue.

And also bear in mind should you wish to persue the matter with CS and Skoda UK and to a point the dealer maybe naming them on a forum when the matter isn't concluded isn't the best course of action.

I know what you mean about naming them, but after speaking to the guy again at the dealer he did sound like he was trying to help me out and even spoke to Skoda Tech and CS again on my behalf after speaking to me but he said they were having none of it and were adamant that they will not be paying up. I'm now spending all my money on something that would've come eventually alot sooner. There's no point me feeling down about it for too long as annoying as it is, I can't be bothered with the fuss anymore and am just going to mod the car to my hearts content and to a point my bank says stop. After this I've lost all care for Skoda warranty and after I've run the car till it won't run no more I'll be changing to another manufacturer, hopefully by then I'll be able to afford something far more exotic :)

Anyway I've enquired a bit further into the Turbo Solutions hybrid and they've told me it's a VNT17 with a VNT20 compressor wheel, uprated thrust bearing and they put a total seal piston ring in. This is far too technical for me so can anyone explain what that all means. Oh and if I didn't have a turbo to give them in exchange it's a further

Ive just come onto the forum because this has hapened on my way home so im glad Ive found this (or not as the case may be).

My engine light has come on and there are rattles from the engine bay at low revs and it all happened as I was going along and accelerated. Now I have no power struggle to get up hill and there is a bit of smoke when I take my foot off the pedal.

Is it safe to drive or am I going to be doing it more damage.? My cars got a turbo back exhaust and induction kit so it would be easy to blame mods and not get it done under warranty but I just want it sorting out.

Also how easy is it to check the intercooler pipe which may have worked loose so I can have a quick look tonight?

Any advice greatly appreciated.

It sounds very similar to mine so possibly is the turbo, however still check the intercooler pipe you never know how lucky you may be. Also check the oil as this is the first thing they checked on mine and make sure there's some in there. Let me know how it goes with yours as it'll be interesting to see if they agree to pay up or refuse. I wouldn't drive it just in case you do cause more damage to other parts. Sorry I can't help more but there are plenty of people on here in the know.

Unfortunately it wasnt covered by warranty. Cost

I had mine inspected yesterday and it was found to be the bearing that had gone due to lack of lubrication so they refused to cover it under warranty. I was quoted

The impelor (?) obliterated. The car has an induction kit, exhaust and remap so it was blammed on the mods putting alot of extra pressure on it. So possibly my own fault. I brought it with all the stuff on it already and to be honest I question now if the turbo was ever right since i had it. Totally different power delivery now.

The bloke at the garage said one customer is on his third turbo now and has since returned the car to standard. I chose to make sure I got the bust turbo to part chop for a 'better' one if needed later.

Bloody Skodas. Its cheaper to run a Subaru!

Hi people. Guess what. This happened to me last night, went for an overtake and BANG. Looked under the bonnet and the intercooler pipe had blown completely off the bottom join. The very nice man from the AA did a quick fix with cable ties but NO POWER & PLUMES OF BLACK SMOKE. Decat remap and a vortex exhaust. I am sensing a pattern here!!!!!!

I will let you all know the outcome and how much.

I have refitted quite a few lowrr intercooler pipes on standard and modified cars, just a crap design of pipe tbh.
