DIY Grill Replacement project...

Featured Replies

Gave into temptation in Halfords of all places today (as it were) and picked up a large piece of grill work...

Tomorrow will have a go at fitting it - Graeme seems to think it relatively straight forward... will have to dig out the camera :)

Cost of project so far:

After seeing Graemes, I thought I'd have a go too, but I've got fat hands/arms so I am trying to figure out a way to neatly include a bonnet pull.

I'm planning on cutting a "tidy" hole for the bonnet pull... remains to see if it works or not though... :D

Depending on the size of the mesh, if you plan it really carefully, you may get the bonnet release tag popping in between the metal bits ;)

Graeme had tried it, and apparently it looked rubbish. I'm trying with a metal coat hanger and a straw, and if that fails I may resort to cutting the hole.

Also toying with the idea of having a cut-out for the release, and perhaps edging it with something. Gawd knows what tho...

Was fairly straight forward to do, but time consuming cutting the mesh to fit! Just don't rush it and should be ok. It was much lighter too with the mesh in as that big black plastic lump dissapears. :D

It did look kind of rubbish with the cutout, but my grill was silver when I had that done. Sprayed black though, it may not be noticeable. ;) Worth a try.

I just like confusing people when they can't find a way of opening it! :P

If its the Ripspeed mesh then it is *very* soft. I used it for my sacrificial aircon protection and it is very easy to bend into (and out of) shape!

No updates... may have another go this week... :)

Steve - your mods ideas are rubbing off. I've got my two end vents at home ready to apply some silver touch up paint to the slats. Will have to see how it looks with black plaggy surround and metallic silver slats.

Ooooh - it'll end in tears .... :nono:

Those tears can be prevented by someone offering to buy them off me... :P  But I fancy seeing what the painting will look like.

Painting things in silver never works, trust me :)

I'm hoping using a touch-up stick instead will be less careless. :P
